Things I have realized lately:

Feb 24, 2010 18:33

Part one:

  1. The country is too full of college degrees, and
  2. The country is placing too much pressure to attend college.
  3. The country is obsessed with pandering to the lowest common denominator of intelligence in an attempt to let "everyone win".
Hubby and I were talking about how ridiculous it was that one has to have a degree to do even a secretarial job ( Read more... )

realizations, blah, update, frustrations

I couldn't have said it better myself, hon. I'm just so frustrated with all of it--to the point I'd LOVE to go to someplace like Iceland or Germany that matches up more completely to the ideas Hubby and I want in life. But then I know that by "running away" from it, I have no opportunity to fix the problems I see.

It's sort of a reverse of "taking down The Man from the inside". Instead improving The Man so everyone is happier and more fulfilled.

Well said~ :)

I work in retail (dreaded job of doom) and our company is always trying to make us force the customer to buy useless crap, or do things that are pointless. Like if someone buys a game, tell them they should use that money to pre-order a different game instead. Oh, and also pay for the initial game too, because you know, you can't have that for free, just give us more money.

With all the things we need to tell the customer now, it makes me feel like a telemarketer. You just see the customer's eyes glaze over, or they'll say no before you even get to say a word. :P

((Luckily, we are all jaded and have a dark/dry sense of humour at our work, so no one takes offense.))

You got it. Our company used to actually have really great incentives, until GameStop took over. (I work at a EB Games, but GameStop bought us out)

Initially, pre-orders were just that, put some money down, get cool swag/bonuses, and reserves you a copy even if it's sold out. Just recently (this year, and a bit of last), they're jamming down out throats to start harrassing customers about everything. Makes me feel like a dirty used sales person. >:[

We don't always listen though... hehe. Because our customers are cool, and loyal, and we're not going to be asses to them. Which is why everyone comes to our store. :D

I don't mind paying for college, but I REALLY wouldn't mind the costs being a LOT lower... A LOT!! That's why I'm hoping the whole "if you can't finish paying in 10 years your student loan debt goes poof" idea goes through :D It would help folks like McJobbers out a lot :P

I just mostly need to get out of my fast-food job and get into an area that uses my (limited) knowledge of my in-progress degree. Because this is just getting ridiculous. I'm NOT a flakey HS kid, FFS. I'm a responsible, but jaded adult who is using this job as a means to an end, not as a life-support system like some of them seem to think (since they keep threatening my job...)

Interesting--Hubby had been telling me about that article, but I hadn't been able to read it yet :P

The college degree thing is shite, to say the least. There are lots of perfectly amazing workers who lack nothing actually required for these jobs--save that the employer demands a useless piece of paper saying you can handle college work...
