Food rant
I have been unable to function for the last week. I eventually figured out that it was because we bought a new brand of eggs. The chickens who laid those eggs must have been fed truly stupendous amounts of penicillin-based antibiotics, because enough of it wound up in the eggs to make me very unwell after a couple of days of eating eggs for ( Read more... ) -

A lot of things got neglected while I wasn't feeling so well. This weekend is the first time in a while I really felt like doing things, so I spent all weekend in remedial housecleaning. I now have an uncluttered kitchen, fresh batches of bone broth and kombucha and clean socks. I feel ready to face the week ( Read more... ) -
Wildfires
Apparently there are a bunch of wildfires burning in Oregon and Washington states. We can't see Portland from our house because of the smoke haze.
This is the first time since we've moved here we've seen this. Possibly this is related to unusually hot and dry summer we've been having. -

Yesterday I left work and went to get my bicycle out of the bike rack (which is one of those vertical ones with hooks that the front wheel goes over). When I lifted my bicycle, the back wheel fell off. That was definitely a head-scratching WTF sort of moment ( Read more... ) -

And I just managed to shatter my favorite gaiwan completely. Well, at least it happened after I bought a new one, not before. But now I'm still down one.
It was beautiful long quan crystallized celadon ceramic. I would like to find a similar one, but I don't know how. -

Maris gave me a bunch of lavender on Sunday, so it is currently hanging in the kitchen to dry and making the house smell good. I made chai with a Mengku ripe puer, lavender flowers, orange peel, cardamom and cloves. It was very tasty. I think I'll skip the cloves next time ( Read more... ) -
Family reunion
This weekend was my family's annual reunion up in Maine. I couldn't go; I have no vacation time. However, Maria used facetime on her ipad to call me and I got to attend virtually. They passed the ipad around and I got to see and chat with everyone. It was lovely. I also discovered that one of my cousins lives in Portland now about 10 blocks ( Read more... ) -

Just whining really
It's hot and muggy here in Portland. I noticed at lunch that one of the food carts is listing "Free Heat Stroke" on their specials board. The A/C here at work has gone out. The thermometer near my desk reads 87 Fahrenheit.
I am trying to work up the energy to pack up my laptop and go someplace with A/C and wifi. I will be happier if I do, but ( Read more... )
