I worked on some variety show thing a while ago and it was as you say. They had two actual experts and then a whole slew of random "talents", including the obligatory Johnny's kid and the all-seeing eye of Mino Monta.

I also like how if you're a musician, you're obliged to show up on that one weekly music show and take shit from Downtown at least once a month, no matter how hardcore your image is.

Yeah. The thing is, very few musicians in Japan are actually hardcore (or even musicians) - they are all "made" by their studios, personality, look, and all. Even the ones that look hardcore sound just like everyone else when talk show hosts talk to them...

Johnny's is also very sad (as in, pathetic). Why is SMAP still around? When will they finally quit?! It seems like 90% of male "talents" who are not comedians are Johnny's...
