I just finished licking an envelope with a letter to our dear friends at the College Board. Like many of you, I took the SAT this past saturday. I have a hard time not smiling after reading your explanation. I can't believe I missed it, now that you've worked the problem out. I've got a lot more respect for the college board now.

I can't help but think that problem is beautiful, and so are you.

thanks.

I'd like to point out that actually, the logical answer is 30 people in line. See, there are 10 people in front of him, 19 behind (which is 9 more than 10), and him in between. The total number of people in line (30) is three times the number of the people in front of him (10). Thus, all the conditions have been satisfied and the number of people in line is, conclusively, 30. I'd be happy to show you the algebra if you're interested. The College Board almost never makes mistakes, especially when it comes to math. Ah well. Happens. :)
