Wow, that walk looks amazing and quite doable -- you can just take the train back, right? I was just thinking of that one Boxcar Children book where the kids took a multi-day bike trip, and I was wishing I could do something similar. You should do it!

When we walk to West Virginia, I usually take some spare clothes (most usefully some spare socks), some snacks, about a liter of water, and some cash. We end up stopping in small towns along the way for lunch, dinner, water/liquid refills, etc., and it works pretty well because there's a town about every four miles.

Yup, train back! (If you've seen Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind, same Montauk)

I'm very interested in how you folk handle the West Virginia walk, which is about 40 miles? I'm really struggling estimating how far I want to push myself. I'm confident in my ability to do 25 miles a day for multiple days...but I'm not sure if 30 a day would be smart..But I'd much rather average something close to 30...hmm...I should probably assume low and leave some wiggle room in the schedule for faster speeds.

Spare socks for a day's trip seems pretty smart. It would be nice if I could find a washing machine along the way haha...I'm so tough....
