Dead to the world?

The UK singles chart used to mean something, having a number one was THE benchmark, that was the goal...along with appearing on Top of the Pops.  At least when I was 16 and dreamt of such things.

I heard Umbrella for the first time yesterday.  It's been at number one for 9 weeks apparently.  I didn't know ( Read more... )

Nah, not dead, just more selective and less interested. Although it's true that there are any charts shows on TV anymore while they were still on because it wasn't worth sitting through an hour of pap just for one or two potentially good tracks.

I think subjectively speaking, chart shows nearly always were a case of sitting through an hour of pap to hear one or two good tracks.

I think that, with there being so many different forms of media to watch/listen to now, it's very easy to miss out on things that you couldn't at one time avoid. Remember when there were just three tv channels, for example?! It was a little hard beck then to not at least have an inkling on the charts. The last time I turned the TV on to watch TV rather than a DVD was.....sometime a couple of weeks ago.

Yup. I agree and in some ways I do bemoan the plethora of channels now. Quantity seems to equate to a proportional drop in quality.

And yes, when TOTP was THE program for music it was important, now it has ceased to exist because that music can be accessed through various channels, be that radio, tv, background music in shops, internet, download, whatever. Music just isn't as important as it used to be.

Radio One was the soundtrack to my degree - it was either that or the sound of the workshop which really begins to grate after 2 months... Yet they barely played this awful song. The scallies are obviously all making the extra effort to seek out RnB, rebelling against the indie played on R1 ...or she's rigged the sales.

Anyway, i have heard it quite enough and paired with seeing her chip in a couple of chorus lines and nothing else during a live performance for the Big Weekend, she is cemented in my 'must die' lists.

URGH!

The best thing about not working in music anymore is not knowing what drivel has found it's way to the top of this weeks pile.

Sounds like you have found yourself a nice little area just about detached enough from popular culture to not be aware of the latest hits but young enough to give a shit.
