Masterpost "Jack, I think I might be pregnant," was the first words Jack heard when he entered his kitchen after work. He stopped dead in his tracks and just stared at his wife who was standing there smiling.
"No, no, you aren't. That's impossible, you're on the pill, you're not pregnant, you have a food poisoning," Jack laughed shakily, having to support himself by setting his hand on the kitchen counter.
"I .. I sort of stopped taking it," she admitted cowardly and looked at the floor.
"You did what?!" Jack shouted and suddenly the earlier feeling of his world shattering around him was overshadowed by the anger he felt towards his wife.
"I'm sorry, Jack! I thought I was loosing you and that a kid might save our relationship!" she cried at Jack, tugging the hem of her shirt.
"Why would you bring a poor child into this relationship? Our relationship is dead and not even a child can fix that. Can't you realize that?!" he shouted yet again, and the sight of his wife looking so small didn't even bother him. He was so angry and upset and he really didn't understand how a child would have a normal childhood with two parents that clearly didn't love each other.
"Because I want you to love me again! Nothing is how I wanted my life to turn out! You barely look at me, you never touch me or kiss me, we rarely have sex and you've changed Jack," she sobbed from her side of the kitchen.
"I know! Don't you think there's a reason for that?" Jack fought back, and if slapping women was accepted she was the first person he would've done that to.
"Well.. I just want the old Jack back again," she exclaimed and threw her hands up in the air.
"You probably blew your chances there. You're sleeping in the guest room tonight and don't try and talk to me. And tomorrow I'm taking you to the doctors."
"Why are you taking me? I know I'm pregnant!"
"How can you be? You haven't even taken a test, dammit!"
"Fine! We'll go see a doctor and then I'll prove you wrong," she smirked and held her hands protectively over her flat stomach.
"I swear to God, if you're pregnant you're getting rid of it," he growled and walked up the stairs, slamming the door shut behind him.
He could hear his wife's quiet sobs through the wall as she passed by his room, and honestly he didn't give a damn. She had set him up by trying to bring an unloved child into the world. He didn't love his wife any more, it was basically the only thing he'd been thinking about the last months.
His wife had always been kind and caring, and not to mention loving. Jack had never in his entire life thought that she would do something so.. so evil. If she thought that a baby would fix their marriage she was bloody wrong. Even if she was pregnant she would get rid of it.
When he woke up the next day he called in sick saying he had a fever and that he was going to the doctors, which wasn't completely a lie either. He got dressed quickly and made himself a sandwich before his wife came downstairs dressed in a black pencil skirt and a powder pink blouse.
"You look nice," was all he said before he found his car keys and walked out the door and to his car. His wife followed soon after in a pair of sky high Jeffrey Campbell shoes.
"If you're pregnant I don't think the shoes are a good idea," he muttered sarcastically and drove out on the road. His wife didn't answer, she just looked down in her lap ashamed.
They arrived at the doctors office not long after and they both didn't say anything until they reached the desk.
"What's your names?" asked the elderly woman behind it.
"Jack Barakat."
"You're here for the ten o'clock appointment with Dr. Goldstein?"
Jack nodded his head in confirmation and walked over to a seat where the woman directed them to.
He sat down and found a car magazine laying in the magazine bin next to his chair. He wasn't interested in cars at all but it was the closes thing he could come to a distraction from his wife.
"Are you really that angry at me that you have to read a magazine about cars just so you don't have to talk to me?"
"I want to read," he stated simply and shrugged.
"You don't know shit about cars and you don't even care about cars," she laughed bitterly before she turned her attention to a magazine she had brought with her. About babies of course.
Jack's head snapped up and he turned his attention to the person who was calling his name. Dr. Goldstein he noted.
"So, I assume that you want to be pregnant," the doctor laughed and gave her a cup to pee in. "Here, go to the toilet and then come back with it," he said and when she closed the door behind her, the doctor turned to face Jack.
"So, how are you taking the news? You don't look like the typical exited father that comes in with their wives."
"Uh, it's just not how I imagined it," Jack said and bit the skin around his nails.
"I can understand that it might come as a shock to you.."
"A shock?! It wasn't expected at all, I thought she was on the damn pill. That woman tricked me just so I wouldn't leave her because our marriage is already going down," Jack stated angrily and pinched the bridge of his nose.
"Oh.." was all the doctor could utter before his wife came smiling inside again.
"Here," she said and handed him the urine sample.
"Okay, you two just stay here while I go deliver it to the lab," he said and smiled awkwardly at the two of them.
"You didn't get that pregnant woman in the waiting room to pee in the glass for you, did you?" Jack asked sarcastically.
"No, I didn't. I am pregnant, I can feel it on me. I haven't even had my period for weeks now," she grinned and rubbed her stomach and looked down on it.
"You're not pregnant."
The doctors voice had never been such a relief to Jack before and he couldn't help but smile. His wife wasn't pregnant, meaning he had no reason to stay with her.
His wife looked like she was on the verge of crying but simply nodded.
"But ... but what about my late period?"
"Probably just cause by the fact that you stopped going on the pill," he explained and made them sign a few papers before they were free to leave.
When they got to the car Jack just sat there staring at nothing and grinning. It felt like the weight of the world had been lifted off his shoulders and nothing could bring him down.
"So what is going to happen now?" his wife asked from the seat beside him.
"Honestly? I don't know," he sighed and just like that his nice moment was ruined. Having to think about what he would do with his wife. He couldn't just throw her out, he wasn't cruel either, but he didn't want her to live with him anymore.
"Let's just go home and discuss it," Jack said and started the car, setting it in reverse.
