I suddenly feel lucky that I went to a high school where being academically inclined and interested in extracurriculars other than sports was normal and encouraged. My mentor teacher advises the Debate Club, which formed a year or two ago. This is a thirty year old high school! She then told me that they only get a little time during the school day

Maybe there are just a bunch of kids there waiting for some kind of extracurricular outlet that doesn't involve athletics. They just may not have anyone to help them organize it or sponsor it. I can guarentee you that every school has some nerdy kids hiding away waiting to do something besides play sports.

Yeah, I know there are some kids that want other things. There have to be. I was just totally amazed at the differences between my high school and this one.
