Why do they subject high schoolers in this county do the insipid texts that I had to read as an English major, that really have no significance beyond being early literature and indicative of its development? We don't even start Shakepeare until after the first quarter is over--they do excerpts of Beowulf, the Seafarer, Caedmon's History of the ( Read more... )

Odd. I went to one of those "fancy" expensive college-prep schools and we didn't read ANY of that, except Shakespeare. Mostly we read contemporary lit. I hadn't even heard of Beowulf. Where exactly are they making high schoolers read Sir Gawain?

I hate the Faerie Queen.

There's a fellow English teacher i my cohort of MAT students that has an internship with 8thgraders, and they're doing Beowulf! Weird! I intern in Carroll County in Maryland--it's basically rural suburbia. A lot of the people who live there work in Baltimore, but the best description for it that I've heard is...Pleasantville. He He.
