Summary: "It's ready. It's ready to defeat supers. Now how am I going to get them to come here?"
I'm the Head of Network Security for Nomanisan Island.
My network has been secured.
Now what?
That's how it begins, you see. The very intelligent are also the easily bored, and there are only so many hours I'm willing to spend sitting in front of my terminal playing freecell before I do get bored and wander off to find more meaningful interaction. Which is how I became involved in Project Kronos.
Syndrome sighed in frustration and brought a fist down on the keyboard. I winced at this new assault on the equipment, but held back my protest. He had told me on more than one occasion that my job was security, not hardware, and the care of the physical machines was not my concern. But I still winced.
"It's ready. It's ready to defeat supers." The thought alone was enough to put the boyish grin back on his face. It crumpled a second later. "Now how am I going to get them to come here?"
"You could tell them it's running wild," I suggested.
"Wild?" he echoed, turning around slowly. I realized that he'd probably not heard me come in, absorbed as he was in his dilemma.
"It's a learning robot, right? It figured out that it didn't need to obey its owners any more."
"But Ni-ni's programmed to be loyal," he protested.
The killer robot has a name? I marveled, but said, "Yes, but they don't need to know that," without missing a beat.
"You really think they'd come?"
"It's been thirteen years since the American supers ban, right? I'm sure most of them are dying to see some action again. Being super is -- a calling, something that doesn't go away. Offer to pay them so they know you're serious, but I bet most of them would be willing to do it for the sheer joy of it."
"Mirage, you're brilliant." The boyish grin was back, wider than before. "They want to be super, we'll give them the chance to be super. And then...." The smile turned cruel. "Blaze of glory time."
