why "coldly" optimistic?

Because I wrote a relatively blunt but complete and honest letter to Jen, the ex-something I finally heard from. Optimistic, because I am cheered by the fact that she finally wrote me and seemed interested in being friends, and cold because, by this point, I feel for her as if I had never known her: not bad, not good, and not worth putting any emotion into. Terribly blunt again, perhaps, but honest.
