Date: Today (Wednesday the 22nd of September)
Who: Shiraishi Yukari and Shiraishi Kuranosuke
Rating: G
What: Yukari surprises her big bro by way of coming to Eclipse
The tail end of September seemed to be a nice time of year for Eclipse Academy. Kuranosuke’s window and curtains were open, allowing cool, fresh air to blow into the single-bed room. The breeze was exceptional, being that he was on the top floor, and it felt rather invigorating and nice as he sat perched over a sheet of paper and book at his desk.
As per usual, the fire aristocrat was being diligent in his studies. Not that they were particularly hard, but he would rather not have to stay longer than he absolutely had to. Even given the friends he was making while there.
Crossing his leg over the other, he leaned even closer forward and relaxed as he rested his elbow against the desk and held his head in his hand. At least the reading was somewhat interesting.
Unbeknownst to the older Shiraishi, his quiet and calm day of studying was about to be abruptly interrupted.
Yukari let out a soft sigh as she trudged up to his room. Honestly, the top floor? Such a pain to get up to but she had to admit relaxing on some of the rooftops didn't seem like half a bad idea in the future with the lovely view. The Academy was nice and secluded but not too far off from town and the fun of civilization. And of course the populous inside the school would prove to be equally interesting no doubt. But the girl was still a bit apprehensive about exploring much after her long trip from home to make it there on time.
She soon enough found herself standing in front of the door, glancing at the number just to be sure and remembering it clearly from his letters sent home addressed to them. Putting on her best smile she lifted her dainty hand and gently knocked on the wooden surface. Now if he didn't answer... well she would just let herself in one way or another~
The knock at his door was a somewhat unfamiliar disturbance that had Kuranosuke’s concentration cracked immediately. He blinked for a moment and dropped the pencil between his fingers as his head tilted toward the door. It was almost as if he was trying to sense who was on the other side, but that was impossible due to not having that ability.
Swiftly, he stood with a muttering of “coming”, and crossed the room. There were no moments of hesitation, even if it could have been someone he disliked. Kuranosuke was confident that even if it was Niou, he could tell the other teen to go away and get back to his business.
But it was a good thing, as he pulled the door open, that it wasn’t someone he disliked. It was someone so much more familiar and heartwarming to see. And such a shock that it had the poor fire aristocrat blinking in confusion. “Yukari...?” Aww. So much disbelief in one voice. “What are you doing here?”
"Ku-chan!" she chimed happily as he appeared before her. Just when she was getting ready to melt the doorknob off to get in-- probably for the best she had a bit of patience. She tilted her head up slightly, as if questioning his reaction. Then, placing her hands on her hips she pouted slightly, "What, not happy to see me? Just when I went to the trouble of coming here to attend school now too..."
“No, no.” He chuckled. “Just didn’t expect to see my baby sister on the other side of my door at school.”
Aah, just when life was dull, something interesting happened. Kuranosuke moved aside so Yukari could come in, and was extremely grateful to himself that he was always such a neat freak. “Why didn’t you tell me you were coming? I would have picked you up at the train station.”
"I'm no baby." she rolled her eyes slightly at the comment. "But I didn't expect Ku-chan to stay here so long... so I decided to come see what was so intersting about this place too." Which was just a roundabout and vague way of her really saying she missed her big brother, even when he called her a baby. "And it wouldn't have been a surprise that way."
Entering the room she couldn't say she was surprised to find it clean for the most part. She glanced over at the desk and noticed the books and papers. "Studying? You mean school here actually requires work outside of the classroom?" she blinked, surprised especially considering how efficient he normally was for lessons back home.
“Fair enough.” A smile formed on his lips out of amusement at Yukari taking the ‘baby sister’ comment too literally. He didn’t correct her about it, though, as he closed the door after her. Truth was, he probably would have made a fuss over her coming anyway. He did have a duty to protect her, even if she was capable of doing that herself.
Kuranosuke’s eyes landed on his desk and his smile broadened. “It’s called ‘homework’, Yukari. You’ll get some too~” The glint in his eyes said he was looking forward to how she dealt with that. “I’m just glad I actually had time to do mine tonight.”
She made a slight face at that. "Homework..? No thanks..." she shrugged, as if ignoring it now would make it go away in the future. It wasn't as if she didn't know what homework was-- more like she had never been given it in her life really. Lessons were all taken care of during lesson time after all.
"Whatever's keeping you so busy you can't even do this much?" she questioned, flipping through the book momentarily as it seemed simple enough. It seemed uncharacteristic for her brother to be so busy when the place seemed so easy; or at least this so-called homework did. She wasn't exactly sure what else went on at a public school let alone one with humans in it.
“The faster you do it, the less you’ll really have to worry about it.” He commented neutrally as he crossed the room. He sat on the edge of his bed and folded his legs up under himself to get comfortable.
“I’m wondering if I should keep it a secret from you,” Kuranosuke smirked wickedly. “Like you did by not telling me you were coming.” Eye for an eye, and all. “Oh, mighty evil one.”
Despite his teasing, he was actually really glad to see Yukari there. Even if he had his cousins, one of which could even be considered his best friend, he still missed close family. The downside was that he was going to have to watch all the boys like a hawk now.
"That doesn't seem pleasant at all..." And still didn't answer her question. Though when he spoke up more it was clear he had no plan of doing so either. "Don't tell me you've found someone to preoccupy your time with!" she faked a small gasp. She took a few steps closer to him on the bed so she was standing beside it and was about to try and pry more when he called her that.
"Ku-chan's the evil one, keeping secrets from me when I decided to come all the way here to go to school with you too." Yukari replied, glancing over to him with sad eyes like she had been abandonned-- which admitedly she did feel like for the first while he was gone. "So mean..." the vampire girl pouted, glancing away like she was about ready to leave the room.
It was really too bad that Yukari’s pouty-girl charms didn’t work on him. They grew up together and despite being away from home for several months now, he was used to them. It didn’t mean he didn’t play along, though.
“Mmm,” He answered quietly. “I did. You’ll find out soon enough.”
Kuranosuke reached up to ruffle his hand playfully on the top of his sister’s head. “But enough about that. How long have you been here? I’ll be sad if you say days and didn’t let me know for that long. Especially if it means I don’t get to give you a tour.”
She was so surpirsed to hear she had been right that she didn't notice the dangerous hand that soon enough messied her hair. Yukari sat down beside him on the bed and frowned when she finally noticed it and swat him away. Now she would have to fix her hair again, as usual whenever she was around him. One would think she had learned better after he was used to her habits and pouts, but he was always able to catch her off guard. Darn older brothers...
"I just arrived today, and I'll have you know I haven't even unpacked or anything yet because I came straight up here to see Ku-chan." she stated proudly, though sent him a slightly annoyed look as she had to undo her pigtails to fix her hair again. "Maybe I should have gone somewhere else though if you were just going to tease me..." the vampire girl added in a soft murmur as she tried to smooth out her slightly curled hair.
It was an older brother’s right to mess his young sister’s hair up. They just had to be teased! Which left Kuranosuke with a small sense of evil satisfaction that tugged the corners of his lips upward into a barely-there smirk.
“Somewhere else? Yukari, just who else would you see?” He mock gasped for a moment, though. “You better not say Kenya, or I’ll get jealous that you like him more than your own brother.” It left him chuckling softly, ruining his own tease. “I’m glad you came up though. I hope you didn’t have any problems with mom and dad though?”
Yukari wanted to say she was going to go to Kenya instead but she knew that he at least wasn't lying about the jealous part. She would save that for another time anyway, especially knowing her cousin was there to visit as well. But her mind shifted to something she hadn't quite wanted to think about at the mention of their parents. The young lady stopped fussing with her hair and left it down as she cupped her hands in her lap for a moment. "Well... I suppose you could imagine what happened yourself." she answered quietly.
The teasing mood between them seemed to die for a moment when Yukari went still and quiet. Yes, he could imagine just what happened. Probably the same that he went through when he said he wanted to go to a school with humans in it.
Kuranosuke hummed softly for a moment, as though he understood entirely. “There are plenty of other noble family’s children here, so once you start writing names down in your letters they’ll come around.” He smileid encouragingly and nudged her arm with his elbow. “Besides, now that you’re away from them you could probably practice something you couldn’t when you were home. Like Kendo, if you wanted. There’s a club here that does competitions.”
"Really?" she blinked, glancing over to him after the nudge and immediately forgetting her worries of leaving home. She would probably think more on them when she was alone in her room later but for now she was with Kuranosuke, the only family she really needed then. "I won't get in trouble for it..?" Because it sure sounded too good to be true.
It had taken her years to convince their parents to let her practice archery thanks to using the teachings of kyudo since it was more like a meditation. But if it was any other type of martial art, especially with a weapon, there was no hope of even being able to observe. She had to wonder if humans had the same problems; keeping up an image for a family and society.
“It won’t be something to write home about, but I’m not going to tell on you. I doubt Kenya and Yuushi will either.” Especially after he talked to both of them about keeping quiet. Niou... might be another problem entirely. If he even cared enough to use the information against Yukari. “If mom and dad find out, I’ll take the blame for encouraging you anyway. There are hunters on campus, and I would rather you know how to take care of yourself better without me around in case something happens.”
"I don't want Ku-chan to get in trouble either though..." she was about to continue to protest when his final words struck her. Her eyes widened at his calm warning and she jerked away a little in shock. "Hunters..? There are hunters here?" The thought seemed ridiculous, especially with the dorm nearly filled with noble children of the vampire society. For hunters to be lurking about-- it seemed absurd, unless perhaps a council member was around keeping an eye on them too. But that seemed unlikely; though one would think there would be since a pureblood child was also there. It all seemed a bit confusing now that she thought about it, really... just what was going on at this strange school?
“Why wouldn’t there be hunters here?” It wasn’t to say that their race was guilty, or innocent for that matter, but the school was human and vampire mix. If the Hunter’s Association didn’t have their eyes on the school, something would seem more off than Vampires being there in the first place. Most of the ones he was thinking about got reassigned, but even if he didn’t know who was one or not, it was a safe bet there had to be at least one on campus.
“Don’t worry about it though, okay. Just enjoy yourself.” Even though the elder Shiraishi wanted his young sister to be worry free, he at least wanted her to be cautious.
"I didn't think about it, but I suppose it makes sense that they are..." she nodded in understanding. The idea was still a bit strange though, but then again so was living alongside humans like this. Then again strange wasn't always a bad thing-- like her wanting to learn a bit of martial arts and indulge in activities that really interested her.
"Not like you have to tell me that though, I will hunters or not, they won't spoil my fun." Yukari smiled, trying to assure herself of the same as well. Though she felt a bit of heat gather in her hands that she hid by cupping together again. After all the idea of hunters being around that she didn't know about made her feel a bit more apprehensive no matter what...
Kuranosuke smiled as well and reached up to pat her shoulder for a moment. “What floor are you on anyway? I’ll walk you back down when you want to go.” That way, he could keep an eye on anyone who might come out and eye his sister up. Most of the dorm was filled with boys, after all. Albeit they were mostly gay, but they were boys all the same. Very much different than himself, which he was an actual gentleman.
“And you better save your first trip into town for me. I want to show you all the good places.”
"First floor... mou, Ku-chan lives too high up." she huffed a little, and punched his arm for payback for messying her hair. Of course she managed to forget there was still a bit of heat gathered up in it. "And yeah, I can't really ask anyone else since I don't know where all of our cousins' rooms are either." Yukari shrugged, though she had been considering the same too. She still needed a tour anyway so maybe she could con him into helping her unpack too~
...Ow. Heat and the pressure of a punch rather hurt. “You punch like a boy.” Kuranosuke teased as he reached up to playfully pout and rub his arm. “Maybe I shouldn’t have suggested Kendo...”
His eyes went to Yukari’s hands then, and it made him wonder what set her off. Was she nervous about being at the school? The hunters? Being away from a majority of their family? She shouldn’t worry so much, as they were both getting on in years and it would only be natural to leave the nest at some point. Their older sister already had. In fact, she was married already.
Though he did have to laugh, at least to himself, at the fact that to see each other they’d have to climb or descend that many flights of stairs. It wasn’t something quite new to him, but it was bothersome all the same to have to do several times a day already. “I think Masaharu is on that floor too. Be sure to use your super punch if he bothers you. And save the heat for him, okay?”
By the time she had finished punching him the heat had all but disappeared as the worries from before left her mind. Even with a few flights of stairs between them she was still near her big brother and that was what really mattered. Even if he was a big tease to her constantly. "At least I punch better than you." she huffed back at him, glad he had mentioned kendo to her now. She knew who her out of club sparring partner would be now~
Yukari blinked at the mention of yet another cousin's name-- was the whole extended family there without her realizing, honestly. "Haru-chan is? Of course, I always save those for him. It's the mega ultra super punches I reserve just for Ku-chan." she giggled lightly, winking at him as she finished fixing her hair back into proper pigtails. It was kind of nice to know family was on the same floor as her as well, even if he wasn't the closest kind of family...
“Y-Yukari...” Kuranosuke sounded somewhat dejected by that reveal. As if he was saying ‘aw man’ without really saying it. “Some little sister you are, reserving those ones just for me.” He nudged her again with his elbow and frowned.
A moment later though, he was actually trying to contain his smiling because he missed their interaction. His sisters were part of the reason he even missed home. Their parents were wonderful and he loved them, but he didn’t grow up playing with them - he grew up playing with his sisters and their cat. “We should get you back downstairs though. If you came up here after getting to school, you probably haven’t even unpacked yet. Tomorrow’s a school day, and you shouldn’t be late your first day.”
"It's because I reserve these for Ku-chan too." she smiled back and then leaned closer until she could wrap her arms around her brother and give him a hug. "Big brothers get big hugs, right?" Yukari added, squeezing a little in a mock bear hug. It was same for her after all-- her older brother and sister were her lifelong playmates and beloved family. Now that their big sister was married and living outside of the house and with him off at the academy before she found herself becoming quite lonely despite herself. So by coming to the school as well it solved that and brought her back to her brother. She would worry about adjusting to school and being around humans in time, for now she was just happy to be with the familiar.
"Really? It's tomorrow already..? I better not get any of that homework..." she whined, still clinging to him. Though she was quite tired from the trip there, even just getting up those silly flights of stairs had taken energy out of her. "I hope the food here is at least good..." she couldn't help mumbling, since aside from sleep that was the only other way she could get energy enough to function on her first day.
“Don’t squeeze too hard you brute, you’ll break me.” Kuranosuke teased with a laugh as he hugged his sister back. He probably shouldn’t ever say such things, and luckily didn’t ever when they were in public, but it was all in jest and to tease her in the end anyway. He didn’t believe such silly things as her being too strong. In fact, he saw any strength she possessed as a good thing. It meant that he didn’t have to worry as much about people taking advantage of her. Kuranosuke even wished their older sister wasn’t so dainty since he always worried over her as well. Much less now that she had a husband, but still worried.
“Mmm, it’s tomorrow. You came in the middle of a week unfortunately. Monday to Friday are school days, and the weekends we can play.” Though unfortunately, he was responsible and every night had guardian duties. Something of which he would need to catch up with, even if he did it at dawn. “As long as you don’t sneak off between now and this weekend, I’ll take you into town and show you the best places. There’s decent food there. And probably better if we buy bulk and stash some in your room like Kenya does in his.” Or like Kuranosuke does himself. Though his snacks are always from the health food store. Soy chips and dehydrated fruits. “But lets go get you unpacked first, right?”
"I'm sure whoever your special someone is they can fix you. Besides if Ku-chan breaks from this I'll be the one worried about you." she rolled her eyes slightly, finally letting go of him. She knew fully well how much he worried about her and their sister. They were brought up as quite dainty girls after all, Yukari just discovered that she preferred to do a bit of protecting herself. Her power was a bit of an incentive for it as well; since if she wasn't confident in her own strength she would have to rely on it unconsciously which spelled bad news for everyone.
"And okay... I guess I can survive a few days of class before the weekend." she nodded in agreement." Maybe I'll ask Ken-chan for some of his snacks in the meantime." Even if she hadn't dealt with Kuranosuke's strange health food snacks for a while she believed she had had enough for a lifetime when he was back home. Though there was a matter of their prime source of food that she was still curious about... but she would save that for later since it was getting late.
It was a good thing that Kuranosuke wasn’t the sort of person to blush easily. He might have given himself away as having a crush on someone if he blushed even the slightest. Instead, he ignored the comment by smiling at it amusedly as he unfolded himself from where he sat. His legs dropped to the floor where he stood up and stretched for a moment. “Might be better if you did, since I know you won’t like mine. He probably has a month supply in there anyway.”
And while he was thinking about it... he truly hoped that Kenya and Yuushi were going to keep being discrete about their relationship. He didn’t want word of it to catch Yukari’s ears.
Crossing the room, he pulled the door open and nudged his feet into the shoes by the door. Gone was every thought about finishing his homework or doing patrol rounds. At least for the night, anyway. No offense to the other students but helping his sister unpack was a little more important at the moment.
Yukari hopped off the bed and followed after him cheerfully. Despite all the teasing and messing her hair she still enjoyed whatever time she could have with her big brother, especially considering it had been a while since they were together. As for whatever relationship he might have or person he may fancy or duties he possibly had there, she wasn't interested in finding out-- yet anyway. There would be plenty of time to explore the place and people in it as her curiosity would get the best of her soon enough. But she'd behave for now like a good little sister and stay under his watch for a bit. At least until he got her to some snacks and she was familiar with the place.
"Ne, Ku-chan..." she spoke up as they both exited the room and she took his hand and looked up to him. "I really missed you." Yukari smiled and got on her toes for a moment so she could kiss her big brother on the cheek.
A-aww... Kuranosuke laughed softly and squeezed her hand with a little gentle pressure. Much like most men, he didn’t tend to show his emotions other than amusement, anger, interest, or curiosity among a few others. But needless to say, that melted him a little. “Who taught you to be so cute? You’re not supposed to use that on me.”
He pulled his hand from hers, and instead of playfully hitting her, he draped his arm around her shoulder and gingerly knocked his head against hers. “I missed you too, though.”
