Yeah, so I'm trying to get back into the whole poetry thing. So far... it's just not working for me.

Every time I try, I get distracted, or get frustrated about the words just not coming. Hell, its hard to even come up with a central idea to base one on.

And finishing the novel? Unrealistic. May happen in my life-time, but certainly not soon. That ( Read more... )

Poetry is a really hard sell-- from everything that I've read. I'm not trying to discourage, I just wanted to confirm. It's possible with the rise to e-readers and e-publishing that poetry might swing back up, but if it does it will be some time before we start seeing the fruits of it. Short stories might be slightly more successful than poetry right now, but they are also a hard sell. For poetry, your best bet might be to put together a collection and self-publish. I'm not sure if you would make anything, but with POD publishing places like Createspace, you don't really have to invest anything into it to get the book out there. Createspace will list your title on Amazon for you-- obviously Createspace and Amazon will both take a cut, and you'll have to do all the marketing and networking and whatever yourself, but at least it would be there for people to buy.

The sad reality is, making a living off of art is very, very difficult to do.

You just summed up the hardest career choice I've ever made.

You just described WHY I got away from trying to put a book out there, and instead focused on a science degree. Irony, that now art is back on the table.

I'd write a book about it, but honestly, I doubt that'd sell either. (More irony.)

Non-Fiction is a slightly easier sell than Fiction :) But only if you have a platform :P ( ... )
