An old friend of mine who is very dear to me and has looked out for me for so many years was in a motorcycle accident. His head was run over and he is brain damaged. He is in a rehibilitation clinic and has been there for a couple of weeks

I think calling his mom is totally appropriate. You don't have to, of course, ask directly what his condition is if you're unsure, but you can first, offer your support and kind words to her and second, get a sense of whether there's anything you can do for the family. I suspect by talking to her you can glean the info from what she's likely to say to you, and surely, she wouldn't take offense if you asked her something along the lines of "i don't want to upset him, do you think a visit/phonecall from me would help or hinder?"
