the past is never far
did you lose yourself somewhere out there
did you get to be a star?
and don't it make you sad to know that life
you grew up way too fast
and now there's nothing to believe
and reruns all become our history
a tired song keeps playing on a tired radio
and I won't tell no one your name
and I won't tell them your name
BASICS;
AOYAGI RITSUKA.
age; twelve
gender; male
true name; loveless
sexuality; ...young, confused, and too easily manipulated. otherwise, straight!
fandom; LOVELESS
A kid too adorable for his own good, paranoid, uneasy, yet just dripping of innocence. Smile for the camera- he just doesn't want to forget you (and he hopes you won't forget him, either, when the day comes he has to disappear). Easily confused, easily embarassed, not too easy to get to know. Can be blunt. Can be cold. Helpless and insecure (he just wants to be loved, really, and who can blame him?).
APPEARANCE;
Ritsuka is pretty much your average twelve-year-old- scrawny and shorter than the average, but otherwise the same. He has somewhat longish black hair that manages, for the most part, to stay out of his face, and large, violet eyes. Ritsuka is the epitome of wide-eyed innocence, and while he attempts to remain aloof it's not difficult for him to end up blushing, face full of vulnerability and naivete. He many bandages due to some of his injuries- most prominently one along the left side of his jaw, as well as around his wrists. Most importantly- and noticably- Ritsuka has a set of large, black cat ears and a tail- signs of innocence and purity in his world, and quite literally a sign of virginity, as the ears and tail are shed as soon as the person in question goes through anything intimate or sexual. But, yes, other than that, Ritsuka's just your normal, skinny little twelve-year-old kid. With cat parts, who is too adorable for his own good. Yes.
PERSONALITY;
For everything he's been through, Ristuka, like most people, puts up a front when facing the world- he distances himself from people when he first encounters them, acting with an air of aloof indifference. He plain honest-to-God doesn't really know how to deal with people- he's a little lost when it comes to social interaction and sort of hovers on the border of friendly and downright cold, not really sure which way to lean, and is sometimes a little too blunt for his own good. Inevitably, though, his pretense isn't a very strong one, and it normally comes crashing down soon enough, leaving behind a wide-eyed and very vulnerable twelve-year-old kid who is just trying to find his place in a world that doesn't even seem to be his.
You see, it was never his world- he stole it. He didn't want to, he didn't mean to, but somehow one day he woke up in this body, in this life, and somehow he stole it from the old Ritsuka. Ritsuka believes that he deserves his mother's harsh words, since he isn't her son. He believes that that nothing was ever really his- not her, not Seimei, not even his friends, since one day the old Ritsuka will come back- and well, it was his life first, wasn't it? Ritsuka didn't mean to take it, but it was only fair to give this body back, and maybe he could be happy with his mother like he hoped they used to be. At first he seems quietly accepting of this fact- he doesn't seem to let it get in the way too much of his life, but it's always that soft, nagging thought at the back of his head- but later on he learns that, well, maybe he has a right to this life, too. His own counsellor tries to tell him this, that there is nothing wrong in living for oneself, but he has difficulty with it, and struggles to reason it out with his on conscience. It's not that he would mind living for himself, but how was he supposed to when his mother wanted her son back so badly?
Ritsuka was only ever really close to Seimei, and his loss left Ritsuka with a great diability in trusting people- it's intensely difficult to get close to him on anything more than a superifcial level. It took Yuiko constant pestering in order to get more than a steady dismissal, and even with Soubi's connection with Seimei he was only really able to get close to Ritsuka by overwhelming him with more intimacy than he knew how to grapple with, and acting like everything was normal.
Perhaps because of all that he's had to deal with in his relatively short life, despite his lack of experience- thanks to amnesia- Ritsuka seems to handle most things with an air of maturity. At the same time it's clear that he is very inexperienced- he has very simple, idealistic perceptions of how the world should work, all dripping with innocence and true childish naivete. He expresses a distate for people who blindly follow the orders of others without thinking for themselves, and does not like the idea of fate and predestination, insisting that he has the right to choose his own destiny. If Ritsuka is one thing, however, he's deeply confused and insecure- he constantly doubts himself and re-evaluates his beliefs in response to everything and everyone around him, as well as himself. He used to believe, for example, that even if he was betrayed or lied to it didn't matter, that he would always forgive, since, well, that may just be the price of being loved. He later begins to realize that it might not be so alright to be lied to, at least not anymore, and tries to deal with the realization.
Ever since his that abrupt loss of memories, Ritsuka is deeply afraid of both forgetting everything and being forgotten, even as he believes that one day he will be forgotten, when the old Ritsuka comes back to claim his life back again. Whenever he meets a person he likes, or perhaps has a connection with his brother (which is one thing that might instantly tear down that pesky wall he has up between him and most people), one thing that he commonly asks to do is to "make memories". He carries a camera with him almost everywhere, taking photographs as keepsakes for both him and the person involved- so that he won't forget, and he won't be forgotten, either. It's a simple, almost childish sentiment, but then again, Ritsuka is nothing but young and innocent at heart- confused and alone in the middle of something he's trying desperately to understand.
HISTORY;
Ritsuka was once just a normal boy- he pulled average grades but got along well with his peers, and he spent his time doing what all boys his age do. That was, of course, until two years ago- when suddenly, he suffered an abrupt change in personality. He became just about the direct inverse of who he was was, losing all his memories in the process- simply put, Ritsuka became an entirely different person.
His mother became violent and abusive towards him, telling him that he wasn't her son- she somehow believed that Ritsuka- no, this boy claiming to be Ritsuka, took away her son, and tried to replace him. But no one could ever replace Ritsuka, and certainly not him- they looked the same and had the same name, but they simply weren't the same person. Whoever this was she had stolen her son from her, dared to pretend that he was the same, to take her son's face. Ritsuka didn't know how to deal with this- for the most part he allowed himself to be injured, believing that he somehow deserved it- and that's where Seimei came in.
Lost, confused and alone, Ritsuka's elder brother was the only person he could ever turn to, the only one who genuinely cared for him, the only one who didn't blame him for stealing the old Ritsuka's life. Seimei would step in and defend him against their abusive mother. It was Seimei who helped bandage his wounds, Seimei whom he could trust, and only Seimei. He became a large part of Ritsuka's life- he simply adored his dear elder brother, the only one who still loved him. Seimei was kind, gentle, understanding, perfect, Seimei could do no wrong, and Ritsuka loved him like no one else.
It was another ordinary day, when Seimei and Ritsuka were lounging about the bed, when Seimei said he'd tell Ritsuka a little secret- his true name: Beloved. He who is loved. Ritsuka didn't understand just what it meant, this true name, but he treasured it nontheless, because Seimei was sharing something special with him and him alone- they already did that, but that didn't make it any less important to him. Beloved was a beautiful name, Ritsuka decided, and it suited Seimei like nothing else.
Less than a week later, Seimei died.
Murdered, killed- some way or another. Seimei was burned alive- they dressed up his corpse in his clothes and tied him to a chair in a grade school classroom, scorched beyond recognition, identified only through his dental records. It was Ritsuka who walked into the classroom and found him there- Seimei was tied to Ritsuak's own seat. Ritsuka was devastated, and was no doubt the strongest hit by the loss- but his mother became even more distraught. Now even Seimei was gone, all her sons had abandoned her, and the only thing she had left was this damned pretender who first stole Ritsuka from her, and became increasingly unpredictable and abusive. This time, Ritsuka had no one to defend him- and well, he still felt he deserved it. In an attempt to protect himself from his own despair, Ritsuka became indifferent, distant- he became convinced that his life was over, that there was no point to living, and he was that was how it would be until the day he finally died. Ritsuka had no fear of anything, no fear of death, simply because it was inevitable.
Ritsuka attends counselling sessions in an attempt to reason out his feelings and ultimately discover why he suffered such an abrupt shift in personality, but to no avail. Still wheeling from his loss, Ritsuka is shuffled from school to school, until he finally arrives at one where he meets agirl he deems as troublesome and idiotic, Hawatari Yuiko, but also where he meets Soubi.
Soubi seems to be meeting Ritsuka after school and his first reaction was to try to run away- Ritsuka isn't exactly sure of what to make of an adult he didn't know randomly meeting him after school. But Soubi reveals that he was a "friend" of Seimei's, and instantly Ritsuka's attitude shifts towards him for the better, asking Soubi to come and make memories with him- ever since he realized what he'd forgotten, Ritsuka takes photographs in order to make sure he doesn't forget things. Ritsuka is overwhelmed and confused by Soubi's sudden intimiate behavior towards him, and even is even more confused when Soubi tells Ritsuka that he is his "fighter". Soubi tells Ritsuka about Seimei's will- and Ritsuka, startled by the fact that he never thought to look for one, finds the will on the computer- the password to it was Ritsuka's own true name- Loveless. He finds a message to him from Seimei, stating that he was murdered by the Seven Moons, and that Seimei has left Ritsuka his fighter- Seimei left Soubi for his younger brother.
Eventually Ritsuka learns about the system in place in their world- that someone out there shares their true name, and they are destined for each other as fighter and sacrifice- in battles, the Fighter does the damage and protects the Sacrifice, while the Sacrifice's responsibility is to accept the damage on behalf of their fighter. Thrown into a world he doesn't quite understand, Ritsuka does what he can in the battles- a natural pacifist, Ritsuka dislikes fighting, but endures the pain based on the knowledge that Seimei once endured the pain as well. They obtain an envelope containing a string of numbers are again fighting the pair they originally met in the park- the Breathless pair, as is their true name- that were somehow the answers to all of Ritsuka's questions.
One day Soubi comes to see Ritsuka, but he stands outside the patio door- he doesn't want Ristuka to see him, somehow. Not understanding Soubi's behavior, Ritsuka tries to push for answers, but Soubi leaves abruptly- not before Ritsuka sees blood on the floor, leaving him suspecting that Soubi was injured and had somehow been going for fights behind his back. Ritsuka eventually figures out that the numbers are information for a meeting in an online game called Wisdom Resurrection thanks to a classmate (and by then, a friend), and enters the game himself, where he finds a woman- a member of the Seven Moons who refuses to give him answers apart from yes or no questions. He discovers that the Seven Moons are a group of six people, and while they killed Seimei, she did not do it herself. Ritsuka soon finds out that Soubi has, indeed, been fighting alone behind his back, and eventually fights with him against the Zero Pair that had defeated him before, the second Zero pair he's encountered.
Thanks to something Ritsuka noticed about the second Zero pair, he and Soubi are able to force them to forfeit the battle. After staying up late for playing Wisdom Resurrection, Ritsuka finds himself exhausted, and he wanders around desperately trying to find a place he can rest. He eventually finds his way to Soubi's home, where he manages to get some sleep, but awakes abruptly after he has a nightmare about Seimei. He stays over and plays Wisdom Resurrection from there again, and through it discovers that even the woman he talked to has no idea who killed Seimei, and that the Seven Moons believe that Seimei is, in fact, still alive. She tells Ritsuka that Soubi knows the most about Seimei, and that he should ask him for the truth- Ritsuka hesitantly asks Soubi if Seimei lives, but Soubi only assures him, "Seimei is dead."
Ritsuka returns home, where he is beaten by his mother again- she locks herself behind a door while Ritsuka desperately calls out to her. Soubi appears in the house and tries to convince Ritsuka to leave her- the phone rings, and she talks about how it was Seimei- that Seimei called, and said he would be calling again later. Ritsuka is confused, and the only thing he can do is believe what Soubi told him earlier- that Seimei is, infact, dead.
Ritsuka and Soubi are instructed by the phone call to go to the park in the 2nd district, where they battle the Fearless pair- they are able to defeat them easily. Ristuka then returns home to see his mother collapsed on the floor in the corridor, asleep- Soubi helps him to carry her to the bed, but Ristuka then asks how Soubi was able to enter the house. Ristuka realizes that Seimei must have given him the key- only that they only moved to this house after Seimei's death.
Seimei was alive.
Head still reeling from the realization, Ritsuka backed into his room, the bed, struggling to come to grips with the fact that Seimei was alive- it felt like the world as he knew it was coming apart, and then, it literally was. He felt ill, and the room was spinning- melting- and he though he saw Soubi, too, melting along with it, whirling in a flux of things he couldn't really see or comprehend- and the only thing that gripped him was overwhelming fear and a last, desperate sense of hope, something calling him. He pushed his way through, trying not to faint from the overwhelming ache throbbing in his head, calling out names without really knowing why- everything, the air itself (if it was even still there) felt thick, groggy, and he struggled through the mess- and just when it seemed that he would vanish into nothing or just go on like that forever, when he pushed forward, something gave way- and he fell through.
He caught a brief glimpse of the world around him before everything went black- and when he opened his eyes again, he found himself collapsed on the floor, in a whole new place he never knew.
and even though the moment passed me by
I still can't turn away
cause all the dreams you never thought you'd lose
got tossed along the way
and letters that you never meant to send
get lost or thrown away
I think about you all the time
but I don't need the same
it's lonely where you are come back down
and I won't tell em your name
