Arguments against LoudTwitter and how to to ignore LoudTwitter entries

Aug 20, 2009 11:00

Despite the fact that I previously considered setting up LoudTwitter myself a year or so ago, I can't help but be annoyed that LoudTwitter recently resumed their service. Looking at my Friend's page lately it appears I am not alone in this sentiment. People seem to have their own reasons for disliking LoudTwitter. For me, there are two ( Read more... )

Well said. I agree with everything, particularly the flawed rationale for putting LT posts behind LJ cuts. I'll have to check out those greasemonkey scripts.

Where's your damn post that you made summarizing why you hate Twitter? I thought it was a pretty good post.

I don't remember making a post like that.

Maybe it was a reply to someone else's complaining about it or asking why it sucked. But yeah I'm fairly sure you said something about wanting longer posts and how no one posts anything anymore.

"I would argue that the friends that actually care about what you are twittering about have their own twitter accounts and are following you by now."Or if they wanted a Twitter account they'd make one instead of having friends make one. I'm not going to use twitter so stop trying to make me...it's a terrible service and just a 'trend' that will fade away like others ( ... )

Basically Twitter seems to have made the general populace dumber and more narcissitic. Given journals already were narcissitic, but Twitter goes way beyond that.

Has it made the populace dumber and more narcissistic, or has it exposed it?

Either way, I find it handy for amusing myself at work and being sarcastic to people at all times of the day.

Agreed. I can more easily and privately look at Twitter posts during work hours rather than LJ.

I stopped loudtwittering because I like to read my older entries and was getting sick of them being flooded by my loudtwitter posts.

But even as an active twitter user, I'm getting a little sick of my friends pages being cluttered with loudtwitter posts. :/

I also think LoudTwitter posts are a fucking eyesore. Links everywhere, #'s, @'s, dots, timestamps. Gives me a goddamn headache looking at them.

(Had to split this up into two posts. Read on for why.)

I don't feel the need to justify my actions or choices, but since I'm being asked to (more or less), I'm happy to comply. Keep in mind that these will all be point-blank and honest comments.

Eric, I don't buy your analysis of "It's my journal and I'll post what I want", simply because you're applying it solely to your own personal needs, but then writing off other people's. Why is it OK for only you to call how LJ should be used (despite near-concluding by saying you're NOT telling people what to do)? My line of thought falls right in line with "It's my journal and I'll post what I want"... because it is.

(1) It's my journal. I'm posting to my LiveJournal. Postings that show up on your friends page are a side effect of you choosing to include me and read them. You've rightfully claimed that if you don't want to read them, you have a choice to no longer include those people on your friends list. You and I completely agree here.

(2) I'll use my journal how I want to use my ( ... )

"Why is it OK for only you to call how LJ should be used (despite near-concluding by saying you're NOT telling people what to do)?"After writing my entry and then re-reading it, I became concerned that I was sounding overbearing, which is why I appended the somewhat contradictory conclusion ( ... )

Never apologize for expressing your opinions, especially when you've got some researched solutions to back up whatever "problems" you think there are. I knew what you were saying, since I quoted it :). Still gonna call you out on it, though! ^_~

For those debating the "value" of a tweet, I'd be curious to know what your theoretical character threshold would be, if there is one. Testing out in Facebook, I see that a status post can be 420 characters. Does that allow for "more quality"? Better "value"? Why or why not? Is it because of the platform and its other integrated options ("like" button, single-threaded tracked responses)? I rarely see Facebook posts that exceed the standard "tweet", therefore creating the same inherent "value" of a tweet based solely on a character limit... so does Facebook still get a get-outta-jail-free card just because it's a different platform ( ... )

The power of imagery! Or, rather, the power of doctored imagery -- I manipulated the DOM to delete some intervening non-tweet aggregator posts. I'm well on my way to my dream job at, uh, Pravda ( ... )

Slow day at work so I actually came back and read, and since you're directing some questions to me I figured I'd answer. I actually think kusoyaro made a pretty good post about why he hates twitter, but will also state a few things myself:

RE: Facebook
I hate both Facebook status updates and Twitter equally for the same reasons so no double standard here. It's effectively the same thing and a facebook page is basically equivalent with a fuckload of updates of trivial things.

RE: Popularity
I'd like to think the hatred has nothing to do with the popularity. At least in my case. There are plenty of popular sites I do use like the above mentioned Facebook. Although I am starting to use it less and less due to privacy concerns and the above thing regarding status updates.

If you want my honest opinion I think Twitter just fulfills some need that some folks desire and I don't desire that so thus do not use it. At the same time I am not condemning those who want to do that. It's your life.

"Daniel's just stated that journals are the ones that ( ( ... )

While it's true that I'm not a fan of Twitter (I have an account, but have never used it), I honestly don't remember making a long, detailed post about why I dislike it.
