Opinions on the idea that "relapse is part of recovery"

I'm new to this community, but I was looking for some opinions on this subject. I recently completely a twelve week daily treatment program and was hospitalized for three week before that. I haven't used any behaviors (restricting, binging, purging) since the day before I was put inpatient. The problems is, I feel like people in my treatment team ( Read more... )

I think you can go through recovery without relapsing. Isn't defining recovery as perfect:wrong saying that there is a right and wrong way?! I think the key to recovery is owning your own and how it looks and works for you. I also believe that you can fully recover and it pisses me off though when I hear you will always deal with this because what I'm learning is in stress I may go back into feeling useless or anxious doesn't mean I will go back to the ed that was a symptom of the way I thought.

Relapse is a common part of recovery but i see no reason why it has to be absolute. People respond differently to treatment. Some can barely manage symptoms even under extreme supervision, other people get in and never have a symptom again. Most people fall somewhere in between. But if it's going well for you, that's a good sign as far as your outlook goes and something to be happy about. Doctors/therapists may be cautious because yeah some patients lie about what they do but don't let that steal your thunder. Also, I feel like people sometimes people overuse the phrase "relapse is part of recovery" as an excuse to just continue being sick and not really try at recovery at all.
