a common sight on the interstate
While I was still at the rest stop near the San Rafael Reef, I saw this pickup truck pulling a trailer and accompanying car pull in. A couple climbed out of the vehicles, stretched and climbed up the hill to get a better view.
I guessed from his haircut that they were a military couple moving to a new duty station. When they started back down the hill, I yelled to them to please pose for me.
When they came down, I gave them a business card and told them if they contacted me, I would send them a photo. (it's a common thing I do... I rarely hear from any of the folks I give a card to though... I guess they forget or think I'm a kook or there are strings attached... ) I did guess right about them though. He was in the Navy and being transferred to a nuclear submarine in San Diego. We talked Navy a little (loooong ago I was a nuclear reactor operator aboard a submarine)... I hope they had a safe trip... They were moving from Minnesota and he wanted to show his wife this place along the way. nice kids
Then just as I was about to climb into the van to go on my way, an eastbound van crossed the interstate and came to the rest stop. A clean cut well dressed fellow climbed out of his van and asked me if I had a gas can as his van was running on fumes and it was 17 miles to Green River and gas. I told him, no and we slid under my van to see if we could find a place to disconnect the gas line to fill a two liter soda bottle with gas to transfer to his van. Nope, no place that the line is exposed. I disconnected the trailer and was ready to cross the interstate myself to return to Green River to get gas... He said that they (there were five of them) were a Mexican band and were traveling from LA to Denver for an appearance there. Just as we were ready to leave, another van pulling a trailer pulled in and he leaned out the window to ask if they had a gas can... Turned out that they did and were carrying it for this specific purpose... so we saved a trip... They were a band also and were traveling from Denver to LV to play there. He asked how he could repay them and the young non-punk looking guy said "pay it ahead"... what a rewarding day I was having already... it got better... stay tuned...
