Darkness Visible

I'm not a computer person, and I don't have any i-gadgets, so I'd never heard about Bill Zeller's death (or Bill himself, for that matter) until tonight when I was scrolling throgh recent posts on Shakesville, but I followed a link to Gizmodo and read about him and cried at my desk. First off, i wish more people had the attitude you do. I'm not saying you need to stop your life every time someone dies, you can't live like that, but what you said is what makes you sad - the fact that someone wonderful was lost before they should have been. In high school, during the school day a girl committed suicide - a freshman. I didn't know her, but i knew her sister, and the whole day it just weighed down on me - she was 15 for god's sake. She hadn't even gotten into the real hard part of high school yet. And my friend asked why i was so down, and i mentioned the girl and her response was "did you know her?" and when i said no she said "then so what? it was her choice ( ... )

I believe suicide shouldn't be vilified, but I believe we should do what we can to help ease others' pain if we're able (and it's not going to be more than we ourselves can cope with). Being all "ho hum" was maybe this girl's defense mechanism, but it's hard to tell from the outside and Jesus. Way to be cold.

My beliefs in the spiritual side of things and the afterlife and God have undergone radical transformations over the course of my life. Maybe the agnostic-ish thing is just one more curve in the coaster.

i agree. I mean i understand some people think it's selfish to leave behind people you love, but as "selfish" as it might be....they lost a lot more than their loved ones did.

I have a very strong personal faith, but i have no qualms about what others believe, so long as it's not worshiping demons and using human sacrifices and whatnot. I guess, as i say, its just i have a hard time with the concept of not existing. But if there is something after this life, i've never been one for the idea that it's like a VIP room where only the true followers get in and the rest of you heathens get stuck in hell or purgatory. A good person is good, no matter what you believe.
