Here in Canadaland we memorize this poem in third grade or thereabouts, since dude was Canadian (it's even on our $10 bill!). I never read the last verse as bloodthirsty so much as wrought with a logical desire for death to not be in vain, and furthermore a metaphorical desire to live on through friends.
It is funny/tragic to think that was nearly 100 years ago and so little has changed.
