There's an awful lot of argument over how it should be handled in this country. I don't know how they do it in England, but obviously it didn't work for this couple

I wasn't gonna mention that when I saw this in the Herald (yeeeaaah my family likes their tabloid newspapers) this morning, "Did that girl like...rape that kid?"
And then I saw he was only two years younger than her
The most annoying comments are from the people who simultaneously imply that 1) The boy is clearly too young and immature and irresponsible to take care of the child but also that 2) He is completely responsible for his actions and is he one to blame, he's old enough to know right and wrong, and is mature enough to be 100% blamed for it.
Which is it, people?
Frankly I think the parents of the boy should be caned, but, the fact of the matter is now that he has a baby and even if his parents are 99% taking care of it, he should be put in a position where he learns that this is a permanent responsibility and not a rabbit. Perhaps one day he can at least grow into a good adult parent, and not go the way of the generation before him.
Actually no, the dumbest comment I heard was "do you think Adam and Eve waited until they were 18 to have children, he's old enough."
What's even better is that his sister had a baby at the same age, you'd think his parents would have figured out how to instill some sense into their kids during that period of time.
To counter part of your point though, I think that there are certain degrees and shades of maturity and competence. I mean a kid can be mature enough to not need a babysitter, but he might not be old enough to watch his brothers and sisters, especially for an extended period of time.
WHAAAAAT? Are you serious? Okay that little piece of info makes this a bit more ridiculous than it was. What terrible parents. I can't come up with a good reason to allow them the benefit of a doubt.
And yeah, definitely. It just seems like some people want to blame everything possible on the kid, and while at 13 (in my mind) this would seem like an obviously bad decision, it doesn't seem like he's had any worthwhile guidance to steer him clear of it.
You already know most of my thoughts on this topic, but I think it's really a tragedy that there isn't better sex education taught in schools, and that it isn't taught earlier than it is now, especially since younger and younger kids are having sex now. But even still, parents need to take some responsibility for talking to their kids early as well.
wow, that is absolutely frightening to think that at 12 a kid would not know that sex could equal babies. i can maybe kind of understand his parents not yet having had "the talk" with him yet seeing as he was only 12 freaking years old...but there is definitely something wrong with whatever sex ed is happening there that he could be so clueless. At least he seems to be emotionally taking responsibility for his child since he can't financially take responsibility.
