Eddie sat in the doorway of the front door of the safehouse, bored out of his mind. He was going to have talk to Jason soon about staying there. Aside from the fact that he was going to go nuts if he was stuck there any longer, he did have some responsibilities. As few and far between as they were. He was expected to show up for training, for team ( Read more... )

Five days.

Colt had been missing for five days and Jason had searched, threatened, beat, and intimidated every person he could for information. The sketches Evan had given him were useless; no one knew these men. Jason was defeated but his last shred of hope was that they would find Colt's body; or something of him to bury.

When Jason saw Eddie seated on the porch steps he knew it was time to let Mike go home, Eddie return to his life and surrender another pipe dream of his own.

Jason sat down next to Eddie and looked at him. "Hey."

It was heartbreaking, that look in Jason's eyes. For a moment, Eddie hated every single person who was involved in crime and had anything to do with Jason. He should've been able to think they were all safe, that he could hope for a different life. They were taking it away from him, agonisingly slowly, and Eddie hated them for it.

"Hey." Eddie reached for Jason's hand, holding one between both of his. The desperation in Jason's eyes was fading into defeat. Eddie sighed. "I have training."

Don't give up just because I can't stay. Outright asking to leave the safe house seemed too much like giving up hope. Eddie didn't want to take away what hope Jason had left.

Jason reached out with his free hand and stroked Eddie's hair, down to the nape of his neck and leaned his forehead against Eddie's shoulder. "I know. We should...Go home."

Jason's hand slid from the nape of Eddie's neck, to the shoulder and down to their union of hands. "The house, yeah?" Jason squeezed Eddie's hands.

"I just...S'been too long t'find him alive. I know that. But there's a part of me that can't let him go."

Eddie wondered if there was any right thing to say to that. If there was, he didn't know it. He didn't know if it was better to agree with Jason and let him give up or to try to give him hope. Which was crueler, that was the question. It had only been a week. Will could still be alive. They didn't know that he wasn't.

"You shouldn't have to," he finally said, raising Jason's hands up to kiss them gently. "It's only been five days. It seems like it's been a hell of a lot longer, I know."
