Today at work I'm transcribing a memoir written by a Mississippi man, covering the 1830s to the early 1900s. He includes this story about an old Quaker man who was rumored to help people escape from slavery.

So then 'Massa Nixon' could conscientiously hide his neighbor's $1,000 negro, but to help 'run' his $25 cow or $100 horse would perhaps be considered a moral wrong and injury... )

Sadly, it's completely believable :/ The lengths to which people will justify their own reprehensible behavior...

On a different note, it's wonderful to know you're so content in your new situation -- work and home alike!
