Today at work I'm transcribing a memoir written by a Mississippi man, covering the 1830s to the early 1900s. He includes this story about an old Quaker man who was rumored to help people escape from slavery.
( So then 'Massa Nixon' could conscientiously hide his neighbor's $1,000 negro, but to help 'run' his $25 cow or $100 horse would perhaps be considered a moral wrong and injury... )
