Reala Icon Tut!

Jul 20, 2007 18:43

Like I said before, I had forgotten how many times I made tuts so, here's another one made from utter boredom and procrastination. XD

** done using Adobe Photoshop CS2
** involves Color Balance
** translatable!

** not for icons with a hard and contrasting red/magenta. :3

Alright, let's get started, shall we? Remember that tuts like this are not supposed to be copied step-by-step, this is merely inspiration and a help guide. ^^ Experimentation is greatly appriciated. :3 There are also alternative icons for this. I'll show you later.

-----

1.) Crop your base to 100 x 100 LJ standard. I chose Reala from Tales of Destiny 2 as my base. Use some Auto Contrast/Auto Levels/Color on it, like always.

2.) Duplicate your base and set it to Screen at 20%.
3.) Duplicate your base, drag it to the top and set it on Soft Light at 20%.
4.) Open the Hue/Saturation. Crank up the levels of the Master, Reds, Yellows, Greens and Magentas. Leave the Cyan and Blue alone.
5.) Duplicate your base, drag it to the top and set it on Luminosity.
6.) New layer, flood fill it with a nice lightish green/sea green. Color Burn or Burn at 40%.

7.) Place this texture on top of everything and place it on Soft Light at 56%.
8.) Place this texture on top of that and place it on Screen at 80%.
9.) Open up the Color Balance and play with the settings. To achieve this kind of coloring, the bar on the RED settings should be greater than the other settings at Midtones. At Highlights, the RED and BLUE bar should be greater or equal than the MAGENTA/GREEN one and at the Shadows, the bars should all be inclined to the LEFT side of the window. Feel free to change the settings according to your icon.

10.) New layer and floodfill it with a nice navy blue. Set this to Exclusion at 44&.
11.) Duplicate your base and drag it all to the top, setting it on Soft Light at full opacity. Duplicate this layer and change the opacity to a lower amount, preferabbly, 30% and below. I set mine though, on 33%.

12.) Lastly, I mirrored this texture and pasted it on top of everything, on Screen at full opacity. There you go! ^^

My final result was this:

Some Alternatives:

1.) You can skip the Hue/Saturation step if you want a little less than vibrant colors. It looked good on Reala, but I like my colors to be bright, so I used it on the tut. ^^

** notice how the green background is a little darker than the final product with saturation. **

2.) You can also skip the part where I placed this texture on top of everything. In doing so, the icon looks more in contrast and I honestly like it better than the final product WITH the texture. ^^;; Only reason I included it because I got majority from my friends that it looks better with it. XD

** notice how it looks darker and more contrasted. ^^ **

3.) If you want the icon more reddished-hued, then you can also skip the Exclusion layer part. ^^

4.) Lastly, if you want to put text on the icon, you can take out the last texture that masks them all up. ^^ Obviously, this particular icon is better without text. :33

OTHER ICONS USING THIS TECHNIQUE:

Enjoy, and comment and tell me how I did! :DD
^_^ V Hope it helped. :D
