28th! A busy day at the bar, apparently! viva_la_materia April 29 2011, 22:07:10 UTC
It was funny, but no matter how rotten a day had been, going to work always felt comforting. Materia was busily washing glasses, which was a good way to keep her nimble hands busy, anyway; and getting the glass spotless took just enough attention that she couldn't dwell on...stuff.

Squeaking a drying rag around inside a cocktail glass, she held it up to the light and squinted at it, looking for smears. The tip of her tongue protruded just slightly, giving her an unconsciously comical look.

28th! Though not that busy customer-wise, as I established in above tags weaver_girl April 30 2011, 06:59:07 UTC
Kagerou knew she was sensitive to other people's moods. Even had she not been, the aura of moodiness around Marbles--that was, Materia, she reminded herself--was all but palpable. She'd wondered a little how to broach the subject with the other girl. They were good workmates. Kagerou kept surprising herself with how glad she was to see Materia back, even if her usual effervescence had somewhat waned lately.

"I'm sure that's clean," she said, smiling out of the corner of her mouth, as she deposited another load of dirty glasses on the kitchen counter. "We could always just dim the lights so they wouldn't notice, anyway, right?" Her voice dropped to a joking note.

Gotcha! (I meant busy inasmuch as CR/tags go. XD) viva_la_materia May 5 2011, 05:37:00 UTC
Surveying the fresh load of glasses, Materia made a face. "Y'know, I kinda like that plan," she admitted with a little laugh, reaching for one and swishing it around in her sinkful of soapy water. "It's something to do, though, right?"

Her brief smile faded away again as she wiped at the glass, though. The water was getting cloudy, so she'd have to change it out soon. Dim the lights, huh? How many lightbulbs were switched off in her own brain? She bit her lip, too captured by that mental image to notice that she'd been absently washing the same glass since she picked it up.

She almost turned with another light remark and left the other girl to her task. It wasn't really her place to pry, even when they were friends. Then she went back to the counter, leaned her hands on it, and tilted forward until she could peer up at Materia's downturned face.

"Listen," she said, gently. "Would you maybe like to tell me what's wrong? I mean, you're climbing towards intervention-levels of glum and moody here, and it's really not like you. I'm a bit worried."

Ohgeez. Materia gulped, and plastered on a wider smile, since the first one obviously wasn't doing the trick. "Glum and moody? Me? No way," she said, forcing a giggle. It sounded tinny, and she resisted making a face.

It was horribly hard to lie with Kage looking up at her like that, all playful and concerned at the same time. "I'm just kinda tired, that's all!" she insisted. "There's a lot of housework to do, while it's just me at home, and...um."

Kagerou concealed a tiny wince at the sound of Materia's laughter--she was quite familiar with how she sounded when she was genuinely happy, and the too-bright chuckle didn't really fit.

"You know you can ask for time off if you need it, right?" She quirked her mouth. "We're properly staffed now, so I'm not going to run anyone into the ground. But..." A deep breath, and she soldiered on. "It's not really that, is it?"

...all right, this wasn't gonna work out well for anybody. Was it. Materia felt her smile slipping off her face, and she wasn't having much luck grabbing for it. Letting it go, she swallowed hard, and set the clean glass down on the counter before turning to hesitantly face Kagerou. They were almost the same height, but that didn't stop her from feeling small.

"I...I think I lost some memories," she admitted. She bit her lip, staring at her boots. "When...you know."

"I know." Kagerou reached out to grab a dry towel and held it out for Materia to wipe her hands. "Here. The dishes can wait for a bit, right? It's not like it's so busy we'll run out of glasses."

Then she stepped back a little, more to give the other girl space, if she happened to want it. "The same thing happened to me. I... don't think it was anything big, but... I feel like I've forgotten someone. Or something. I, um, keep notes of things I want to remember, and some of them are just wiped out.

"So I know how it is, that's all I'm trying to say. Do you want to talk about it?"

Materia bit her lip. Kage was being so nice, and...and she wasn't gonna talk about it, because if she did, the prickling behind her eyeballs might actually turn into...well, she wasn't ready to deal with that yet.

There was nothing for her to cry about, right? So she'd lost a couple of memories. Everybody did. Kage did, and she wasn't bawling like a big baby, right? They could just...make new ones.

When Wolf got back. When King got back.

"Nah," she said, managing to pull her smile back together. "I'll be okay. Happens all the time, right?"

But...she couldn't resist leaning over, to give Kage a quick hug. Just 'cause. Sometimes...sometimes you just needed a hug.

Surprised and pleased, Kagerou hugged the other girl back. She wasn't certain what she had done, yet Materia seemed a little brighter for it. Or at least less fragile. That might have to do; she didn't want to push when Materia clearly got uneasy about the subject.

"If you're sure," she said by way of a last opening, then simply nodded. "Just take care, will you now?"

"Yeah," Materia said, shutting her eyes tightly for a second to just enjoy the hug. Was she clinging? She hoped not, and let go and stepped back when the thought occurred, making sure her smile stayed put. "I will."

Clapping her hands, she turned back to the tub of soapsuds. No time for being a broody McBroodface. She had work to do!
