The spring rain was drumming lightly on the roof, which made it a nice day to spend inside where it was warm and dry. Evidently the customers of the Bazaar had the same idea; there was a good scattering of customers at the tables, sipping steaming cups of this brew or that. With her apron snugly tied and a towel flung over her shoulder, Kurayami bustled around the shop, gathering up a trayful of empty cups and plates with a faint smile on her face.
The last few months had been strange, but not bad. Not bad at all, considering. Life was -

She let out a little cry and staggered forward, and whatever she was holding - something heavy - slipped out of her fingers and shattered with a crash. Her boots skidded on the remains with a wet crunch, and she tripped and fell hard onto a wooden floor, driving her breath out.
Disoriented and gasping, she levered herself up onto her elbows and looked around in bewildered fright. Everything was so bright, after so much darkness. She squinted, eyes watering - she couldn't see. Was she still in the same room?
There were shapes bending towards her, a burst of gabbling startled voices, and she curled smaller, wrapping her arms around herself as she struggled to make sense of what was happening to her...
