That had been an incredibly ridiculous occurrence. Drake had charged in mostly to save his boss' nerdy ass, but in the process he'd learned something very, very startling. He had no idea that Fugue lost everything when he'd rehatched; Salt -- er, Thirty-Eight -- had lost knowledge of people but not general knowledge of what was going on. The difference had startled hell out of him.

The invitation to go see what there was to see and get some serious questions answered was definitely not something he was inclined to pass up. He'd gotten up early, made sure that Want knew he was going to be out for a while on business, then shoved his sword into the back of his belt where it usually was before heading to the door. Unlike most of his compatriots, he was actually walking along the ground. This strange focus and balance was proving to be incredibly handy in this situation ( ... )

Fugue gently released the thin post of a branch just in front of Drake's house, allowing himself to float beside the other before blinking his confusion away. Drake was walking. On the ground. Without the aid of one of those hideous suits. Then the man chalked it up to some special ability while complimenting himself for picking such a person as captain of the guard. Yes, that's right--complimenting himself, because he wasn't even entirely sure of the things he'd done before. At least his choosing Drake was in good judgment ( ... )

Yes, he was walking. Along the ground. No suit required. Drake had been working on this for what seemed like endless hours and while he still had to think about it in order to keep it in effect, he didn't have to concentrate so hard that he couldn't do anything else. That meant that he was free to do other things, like carry on a conversation with Fugue.

"I hope it doesn't get too humid, I hate humidity." He really did, too; humidity meant bugs and stickiness, and that was definitely not high on his list of things that appealed to him. He walked along, watching Fugue as he floated, letting the silence linger until the next series of statements.

Well then ( ... )

Considering Drake's choice in occupation, Fugue wasn't all that surprised that the boy hadn't been down there much. Nor was it much surprise that the other had only seen a few of the places The City Without Walls had to offer--it was truly a large realm, and places such as the library or other islands weren't readily accessible. He ignored the first question, the one asking about the miracle. It was something that could be explained later, after all. But Fugue nodded in response to Drake's other question. "I agree--it is much easier that way, after all ( ... )
