A watched pot never boils. She'd heard that somewhere, Kurayami knew, though she couldn't recall where. In theory, would that also mean that a watched pot never stews itself bitter, or just that it won't steep at all?
She knew she was hovering, but the little earthenware pot with its timer streaming sand merrily away next to it looked so innocent, yet held within itself a cup of steaming water, a spoonful of loose-leaf Mao Jian, and all her hopes for managing a cup of tea that tasted like someone ought to be paying to drink it.
Hands braced on the countertop, Kurayami leaned over and focused her gaze on the pot like a cat stalking a pigeon, willing it to turn out right. She'd been getting steadily better at this since starting work a few days before, but she needed a more reliable success rate before she could be trusted to practice with anything fancier than simple green or black, let alone make the tea for actual customers rather than simply serving it.
The sound of the shop door opening broke her concentration, and she glanced up, wondering how many customers would have to come in before she was called over to help...
Glancing back at her tiny teapot, she chuckled ruefully. Probably not many. Work-right-now was more immediately important than practice-for-later. Still keeping an eye on her timer, she reached for an apron.
