They were dead, and he had no tears for them- couldn't afford them in the desert's heat, and the valley promised to be even hotter. He studied them for a moment longer, committing their faces to memory before turning and heading after the others.

It was worse inside the Valley, and he gritted his teeth against the heat. At least there weren't many enemies to take care off, and the sound of explosions warned them off the wrong paths. The path they were on twisted and turned, making it difficult to keep up speed, and then it opened out, a bridge spanning the distance between the two rock formations.

She was standing there in the middle of the bridge, holding the girl by her arm. The girl wasn't resisting- seemed barely able to hold herself up- and Eagle took the lead, reaching for his daggers. "------!"

The woman held out a hand, forestalling their movement, and gripped the girl's arm more firmly, moving her towards the edge of the bridge. "Don't come any closer… or the girl goes into the flames!"

He snarled, hands clenching around his daggers, helpless to help her, but unable to let things be- but the woman smirked, clearly certain of her victory. A moment later, and her expression changed- someone had thrown a dart, striking her in the shoulder of the arm holding the girl.

She dropped the girl, and put her other hand to the wounded shoulder, laughing breathlessly. "I see you brought company! Well, until next time!"

Eagle wanted to chase after her, but he held himself back, worried about the girl as one of the people came from behind- a cat-person, not part of the group. He was familiar, though, and Eagle relaxed a little, walking closer and smiling. "Ni----! Am I ever glad to see you… How is J-----?"

The cat-person knelt down, hands (paws? he'd never been entirely sure) checking her pulse and breathing. "She's… unconscious," he pronounced. "But the necklace is off, so there's a chance she'll recover… The closest town is Deen… I'll take J----- there, don't worry. Just go ahead and catch B-----!" He straightened up, pulling most of the girl's weight over him, and turned back the way they'd come. Eagle got out of his way, turning to watch him leave as the other five made way, then turned back and hurried onwards.

It wasn't much further to their destination, and to their dismay, the group realised that the woman had already reached it. She laughed again, fierce and triumphant as she turned to face them. "The energy of the Fire Mana Stone… released at last! Pity I couldn't use J-----'s soul to do it… I had to use Bill's and Ben's… but their sacrifices will not have been in vain! My master, my Dark Prince… the Holyland is ours!"

This time, there was nothing stopping Eagle from rushing at her- but she rose into the air and disappeared, and he had to pull himself up before he hit the Stone.

"The Mana Stone's energy has been released…" one of the others said, and he turned to realise that no, that was the faerie hovering over their leader's head. "Bigieu is trying to get into the Holyland! Just like in Altena… it seems that everyone is after the Sword of Mana… If the Sword falls into the wrong hands… there would be another worldwide catastrophe! We can’t let that happen! We have to hurry and find the rest of the spirits!"

They nodded, and his attention was caught by some of the flames seeming to come towards them- he knew a technique, but it was failing him, one of the others-

It spoke, resolving itself into a distinct form. "I hear ya! That girl is gonna PAY for what she did to my Mana Stone!" For a moment, its flames grew stronger, almost an eruption of force, and then it settled down again.

"You seem angry about it!"

"Yeah… you could say it's really burning me up!" The fire- a spirit?- crackled with laughter, and as the memory faded out Eagle could hear the rest of them joining in.
