Try layering colors. If I were going for a black-on-black design, I'd take some other dark color and lay that down as a base coat on whichever parts I wanted to be the darker black, then color it all in.
That's a good idea, and I'll try it out. (Ah, the beauty of Photoshop coloring - I get to try whatever I want and still have the base image left when I'm done!) Thanks!
