Intolerance.

"Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, perhaps despised by many southern lawyers, because he shook up our social structure, and demanded simply that black citizens be treated the same as white citizens, Wasn't greeted with aprobation and accolades by the Georgia Bar Association or the Alabama Bar Association; he was greeted with Horror. Which movie ? (and which brunch place?)
Jimmy Carter was a prophetic president.

"I am only interested in the past as a counsel toward our future."
And as a source for fancy clothes.

Meeting injustice with "a quick fist" is more of a Malcom X philosophy than Martin Luther King Jr--though they had a common goal, the two were quite different in many ways ( ... )

You know, I don't think it's a question of changing people's beliefs so much as changing the hierarchy of their beliefs. It isn't necessary to convince everybody that homosexual sex is morally equivalent to heterosexual sex, or that it's wrong to be uncomfortable in the presence of homosexuals, or that homosexual marriage is not meaningfully distinguishable from heterosexual marriage. I contend that those beliefs can stand, if you can convince the person who holds them that their own beliefs compel them to treat homosexuals with the same love, compassion, and courtesy that they treat .

Isn't that what tolerance actually is? "Tolerance" that demands homogeneity of opinion is just another form of tyranny. Real tolerance is about actions, not opinions.

Oh, Sam.....

I agree with you for the most part, and I certainly am thankful to live here too.

But this part of your post needs addressing:

"The KKK and gay-haters have every national right to live here as to live where they do now,
but they wouldn't dare live here for how quickly and harshly we condemn their beliefs. I see no reason to make these people comfortable in their hate."

There are many communities within 45 minutes driving distance - or less time on a BART line - where the intolerant (as you define them) live right here in Northern California.

I think that you haven't yet gotten outside the central bay area because you don't drive. Unfortunately, when you do, you may be shocked by the pockets of conservatism / intolerance that exist here.

Again, I'm not saying you are wrong in summation, just that your experience in the geographic side isn't complete. And I mourn the fact that may make that discovery. Perhaps by the time you start driving around, I will be wrong.

I hope so.
