Mac

I bought a Mac.
I'm excited to transition away from Windows as my primary machine, but I certainly don't have as much experience in OSX.
So I ask you, faithful readers who already run OSX - what should I install?
What apps do you love and/or use often?
I've upgraded to Snow Leopard & installed iWork.
IM Aggregator? (I use Digsby on Windows)

EDIT ( Read more... )

Adium for IM. Don't use iChat. It's not compliant with standards.

Seconded re: Adium. Also always in my dock are Firefox (duh), Eclipse for making with the code, Twhirl for twitter, Fusion for cross-platform testing and gaming, and *cough* Plants vs. Zombies. For home defense. I use Google Reader for RSS, but remember NetNewsWire being fairly peachy.

Also, I might be tempted by your Touch (there, I've said it). I hate the locked-downedness of the platform, but I was just this morning finding myself tempted by the brand new Nano, which would be $150 for 8GB of media....

You're hilarious.

Thanks for the tips.

If I didn't already own 3 Touches (two old iphones), I would totally buy a Touch before a Nano. The easiest reason is the App store - amidst the crap, there really is a ton of awesome on there.

I'm actually doing an anchoring clinic up in Marin on Saturday. Hopefully next week sometime - I haven't been toproping nearly enough lately!

I'll take the iPod Touch. Where are you living these days?

That was me. I'm in El Cerrito now. Maybe we can meet in Berkeley for a hand-off?

I use and love Evernote, Firefox, Adium, TeXShop, and Vuze (formerly Azureus).

Thanks!

Vuze - oh dear no. I assume it's similar to the Windows version. I want a more lightweight torrent tracker - I use uTorrent on Windows.

I liked it a lot better before it got upgraded, but I never cared enough about having something lightweight that I thought about switching.

You would if you just previously ran an OS that (even in XP) kept eating away at your available memory cycles with bullshit background stuff, apps that never completely close down (apple totally does this too), etc.

I was just chatting with a Mac friend "Close windows... Oh, I never close windows."
"You never close windows?? Doesn't your computer slow down, freeze up, or just refuse to open apps?" (this is with the current industry-standard of 2gigs of RAM, TYVM)
"Um, no. Not really. Welcome to MACs."

Comments from Facebook, just keeping everything in one place:

Charles Jackson: (Congrats on your departure from "The Dark Side")
I like having Firefox on my Mac. But it really depends on what you want to do. I do a lot of software and web development, so I've got a bunch of tools that most Mac users probably never use.

Dan Morgan: Firefox is generally a little happier than Safari. NetNewsWire for aggregating RSS feeds. I use Nambu for twitter. Calgoo Connect will sync your iCal and google calendar. AddressBookSync will sync facebook contact info with Addressbook. Handbrake for video conversion. VLC for playing video.
