As bad as Hikaru felt for leaving Nyota and for what seemed like a mediocre apology, that was not the prime train of thought on his mind at the moment. No, what he was thinking about was Jim Kirk, and what exactly to make of what Nyota told him. It could be simple enough. It could be that the self-proclaimed greaser had decided to be nice to a minority for a change. Unfortunately, that seemed highly unlikely to him.

That just wasn't Jim Kirk.

It was because he was lost in his own train of thought that he was caught by surprise by Nyota. Looking at her for a split second in momentary confusion, he smiled weakly and returned his gaze to the road.

"I know, I'm sorry. I just needed to get him out of there before anything got worse."

"I understand," she replied, after an awkward pause, "It's not that - I mean, I think it's good that you helped him. I just... I'm surprised you didn't come tell me yourself."

Finally Nyota got up the courage to turn to look at him, though she knew he probably wouldn't meet her gaze, since he was focused on the road. "I didn't really know anyone there, you know?

With a frown, Hikaru pulled over and turned to give Nyota an apologetic look.

"I know, I'm really sorry. I don't know what I was thinking, I..."

Not knowing quite what to say, he sighed through his nose and reached over to hold her hand. "It won't happen again, I promise."

"Ok," she replied, casting her eyes downward, "I trust you."

And she did trust him. She just didn't know why he suddenly cared so much about the Russian kid. "So... he must have been hurt pretty badly. Pavel, I mean. I don't understand why those guys care so much about, you know, the way he is."
