Job Title: High School Science Teacher
Company: Public High School
Location: Urban New England

The high school teacher has more to contend with than merely teaching. While teaching is a big part of the job, the high school teacher is also responsible for preparation, classroom management, and balancing the students’ wants and needs with those of the faculty, staff, administration, county, and parents.

The teacher’s work day doesn’t begin when the bell rings for class. It begins the day before, and in many cases, days or weeks before. There are lesson plans to be written, as well as tests, quizzes, and homework; and don’t forget all the papers that need to be graded. In addition, teachers may draw inspiration from media such as television and new technologies that arise, all of which must be incorporated into existing lesson plans.

As much time as the teacher puts into preparing for class, very rarely does everything go according to plan. Students are slow to settle down at the beginning of class, and quick to get distracted during the teaching process. If one student chooses to act out, the lesson is interrupted for the teacher and all other students in class. In addition, the teacher has to figure out how to make the subject matter interesting enough that students don’t get bored, and still stay on track so that the proper lesson is being taught.

The teacher also has to be aware of a variety of different learning styles, including students who learn best visually vs. hands-on vs. those who prefer to simply take notes. And while students are quick to interject their opinion when it’s unrelated to the lesson, they’re not always as eager to participate when the teacher desires student interaction.

Just as the teacher’s job does not begin in the classroom, it doesn’t end in the classroom, either. Teachers must align their lesson plans with the requirements of city and state, while matters of discipline must often be discussed with parents and administration alike.

For all the challenges a teacher must face, it is also a very rewarding job. The teacher is able to play a significant role in the lives of hundreds of students, acting as a role model and someone who has the opportunity to shape young minds and expose them to a greater understanding of important concepts. This is especially true in the life sciences, where the subject matter is relevant to almost everyone’s daily lives.
