Title: Somebody to love
Pairings: Miyata/Tamamori
Rating: Pg
Summary: Tamamori is a very normal boy. One day, Miyata Toshiya moves in next door AU
Notes: BWritten entirely at word, and entirely longer than planned. The title is sneakily nicked from an awesome tohoshinki song 8Db. This is forsleepy_sheep137  for the arashi_on  fundraiser.

-

Tamamori Yuta is a very normal boy. He grows up in a relatively nice, normal family, with one annoying brother and loving, doting parents who let him pierce several different body parts.

Tamamori likes doing normal things; he likes hanging out with friends and spending all his free time on his spacing and lazing about in bed. He has a girlfriend, a cute pretty thing who smells like flowers. They go on nice, normal dates and Tamamori likes her.

All in all, he's a very ordinary boy; with a very ordinary life and he doesn't want any particular change.

And then, all of a sudden, Miyata Toshiya moves in next door.

-

One afternoon, Tamamori is on his way home from school when a van passes him. From inside the van, someone waves at him and Tamamori waves back amiably before forgetting all about it and returning his mind to the problem of convincing his parents that a nipple ring is natural part of teenage development.

When he arrives homes, he sees the van in the drive way of the house next door that used to be full of old people who were living young, modern lifestyles and possibly holding secret cult meetings in their living room.

'Yuta!' Tamamori turns to find his mother standing with another woman on their lawn looking over the unloading with an authority only a housewife is allowed to have. His mother waves him over and, from behind the other woman pulls out a boy.

'This is Miyata-san,' she tells Tamamori, 'and her son. You can play together.'

'Mom,' Tamamori rolls his eyes, 'I'm seventeen, I don't play anymore.'

His mother just shakes her head and pushes Tamamori towards the boy who beams at him so hard his features disappear. Except the nose, which probably can never disappear.

'Hi,' says the boy, ‘I’m Miyata.'

'I know,' says Tamamori. He's probably coming off as a bit of an ass, but he's never going to see this Miyata boy again and he can't really be bothered to make the effort if it's not with his friends.

'We'll only be one bedroom apart,' Miyata continues, ' it’ll be so cool'

Tamamori manages a small smile and a nod. Miyata will probably be a large improvement from the old lady who used to have that room and always forgot to draw the curtains when she changed.

Miyata, smiling and over-friendly would annoy if him they had to be together on a daily basis, but he seems harmless enough right now.

'Cool,' repeats Tamamori, 'Nice meeting you,' he says and then he leaves.

Thinking is rather tiring. Tamamori finds that spacing out is much more effective when it comes to passing time on his bed. As such, there aren't many things that Tamamori likes to think about; they have to be special and important or things that he likes. Miyata, different though he may be, is not one of those things. In fact, it wouldn't be untrue to say that Tamamori immediately puts Miyata out of his mind and caries on floating through his normal life.

-

One day, Tamamori is on his way to school when he hears a bicycle bell behind him. It takes about five seconds for him to react and then about three more seconds to move out of the way.

Naturally, a minor accident occurs.

Untangling himself from the mess of bicycle and legs, Tamamori looks up in annoyance, even though it's really his own fault.

The boy on the bicycle look familiar, perhaps because he's wearing the same uniform Tamamori is. Then, the boy smiles, and Tamamori remembers.

'Miyata, right?,' he waits for the other to nod before he frowns and tells him to watch where he's going.

Miyata doesn't stop smiling, and it's pretty creepy, so Tamamori dusts himself off and leaves again.

Once more, through the course of school and then a date at Shibuya where they get couple jewellery, Miyata is effectively forgotten until Tamamori reaches home and plants himself on his bed.

-

Tap. Tap. Tap.

The only reason why Tamamori gets up to check the window is because he thinks it's the birds that he used to feed when he was a little boy. One day, the bird just stopped coming. Till this day, Tamamori is pretty sure the old people next door had shot them all down, lack of concrete evidence aside.

As it turns out, what is tapping on his window is a grinning Miyata holding onto a vaguely anime-like stick.

It's a bit too much of a bother to open the window, really. Tamamori stares at Miyata who makes a flurry of hand-movements that go along the lines of Tamamori opening his window.

Tamamori sighs, And opens the window.

'I'm sorry for today,' yells Miyata, even though there really isn't a need to; there is all of half a metre between them or maybe even less since Miyata is nearly dangling out his window.

'It's fine,' says Tamamori graciously.

Miyata smiles even wider.

'Isn't this so cool?' he sweeps a head to indicate the both of them sticking their heads out of
their windows to hold conversation.

Tamamori shrugs

'We should do this every night,' Miyata says cheerfully, 'I think you’re the cutest boy I’ve even seen.'

And that's really creepy. Tamamori withdraws his head carefully from his window, shuts it, and goes to sleep.

-

Tamamori is reasonably sure it isn't a coincidence that he bumps into Miyata again on the way to school the next day, only it's Miyata who runs up to Tamamori and bumps shoulders with him in a comradely fashion. Tamamori frowns a little\, but decides that if he ignores Miyata long and hard enough, maybe he'll be left alone.

No such luck.

Miyata is not unpleasant, not really. He's pretty creepy, and also looks at Tamamori kinda strange, but he's not punch-in-the-face irritating. Tamamori even feels a little sorry for him; the guy clearly has no friends. Or at least he thinks so; Tamamori has never seen the boy around school before.

'See you tonight,' yells Miyata when they part at the school gate and Tamamori is walking towards his friends hurriedly.

Yamamoto raises an eyebrow. 'You were walking with him?'

Tamamori splutters, ' he was walking with me,' he says, as though it really makes a difference.

Today is full of less-than-taxing classes, and Tamamori goes through it quickly and just like usual. Only today, Miyata doesn't really float out of his mind.

-

'I'm in love,' says Miyata to his cushion.

From where he's dozing on the couch, Kitayama snorts, 'Again? I thought you learned your lesson after that Nikaido kid beat you up the last time for being creepy round Senga.'

'It was puppy love, ' says Miyata, 'I'm in love with Tama-chan for real.'

Kitayama blinks,' You mean that little blonde kid from soccer?'

'That one,' says Miyata, 'He's really cute.'

Kitayama snortles, 'Good luck, he's already dating someone. And, even if he wasn't,  you’re totally not his type. You stink a little.'

Miyata just laughs good naturedly, ‘Aren’t you late for soccer practice? Taipi’s gonna kill you. Again.’

-

'Fucking Kitayama,' says Fujigaya, 'late again. I told him he couldn't juggle the Anime club and the soccer club'

Technically, Kitayama isn't late yet; Fujigaya just sets the clock faster so he can bitch about it longer. But he will be late, that’s for sure, because Kitayama is always late.

The soccer members who aren't senpai enough stand in a row restlessly and scuff at the dirt as they wait for their captain to make an appearance.

Yamamoto nudges Tamamori, 'I heard they're picking for the school team today,' he whispers.

It's never a bad thing to be in any school sports team. People in the school team are cool, like Kitayama who is cool enough that he can get away with being in the Anime club as well, although it's widely believed that he just likes the club couch.

'Finally,' says Fujigaya, when Kitayama shows up ten minutes later, ' I thought you'd never show up.'

Kitayama grins, slow and easy, and pokes Fujigaya on the cheek (and really, he's the only one in the school who can do that without getting killed; Fujigaya secretly likes him too much to kill him).

'It's one of the earliest he's been late?' comes a voice form the side.

'No thanks to you, big nose,' says Fujigaya as he throws Kitayama's jersey at his head.

Vaguely, Tamamori remembers this conversation happening every practice. Unlike every practice though. Tamamori glances towards the benches where Kitayama is slipping on his socks and chokes on his spit when he sees Miyata looking right at him, smile still unwavering.

Tamamori looks away hurriedly, only to find Kitayama looking at him too, which is different. He blushes.

Kitayama smirks a little. Fujigaya bristles.

'Mitsu, hurry up you slow ass. And Miyata, get yours out of here.'

'But I'm waiting for Tama-chan,' protests Miyata. And Tamamori takes a bit before he realises that he is Tama-chan and that Miyata has just announced this to the soccer club.

'What?' he says, horrified, 'I'm not going anywhere with you,’ His cheeks are traitorously red.

Miyata just grins and sits down on the bench. Fujigaya rolls his eyes,' suit yourself,' he says, and blows his whistle, ' everyone get ready to start,' , thankfully saving Tamamori from further humiliation.

-

Tamamori doesn't claim to be a very, very good footballer like Kitayama-kun or Senga. In fact, he knows that he's just a little bit above the average and that if he wants to make the cut, he'll have to practice real hard. And he has, he really has, and he’s hoping that he won't stuff things up today.

But somehow, lady lucky seems to be smiling at everyone but him. Or maybe it's Miyata.

Whatever it is, Tamamori finds himself fumbling like a first-year and tripping over a rock to land flat on his face.

'My face,' he croaks out, as Yamamoto pulls him up and helps him wipe the grass from his mouth.

'Go sit this one out,' Fujigaya tells him, semi-nicely, but more because he doesn't want Tamamori disrupting the practice. Tamamori obeys, choosing the bench furthest from Miyata. Not that it stops Miyata from coming over to sit next to him.

'You okay?'

Tamamori huffs, 'No, I'm not. And it's not of your business anyway.'

'I'll take you home later,; Miyata grins, 'You can't walk all the way back like that.' Miyata points at Tamamori's rather bloody knee.

'Yes I can,' says Tamamori, even though it really is starting to hurt and having someone help him back would be really nice.

'Sure,' says Miyata peaceably, and when practice ends, he's up on his feet helping Tamamori up and getting his bag from the lockers.

And it's strange, but for all his show of do-not-want, and the fact that going home with Miyata in front of the team is nothing short of mortifying, Tamamori actually thinks it‘s kinda sweet.

Although Tamamori certainly isn't telling Miyata that; not after he heaves Tamamori up half way and carries Tamamori back.

And it doesn't matter that it takes the pressure off Tamamori's leg; it wounds his pride and he makes sure to kick Miyata with his good leg before shutting the door in his face.

Of course, doors are not a barrier when it comes to love, as Miyata tells him through the window.

'I hate you,' Tamamori tells Miyata before he draws the curtains and locks the windows and goes to sleep.

-

Tamamori isn't even sure how it happens, but soon enough, everyone knows how much Miyata likes Tamamori and how much Tamamori is, apparently, playing hard to get
.

'There isn't even much to get,' says Tamamori to Yamamoto, 'and Akina-chan is angry because she thinks I'm cheating on her with my neighbor.'

One moment, Tamamori is normal and sane and happily going through the daily motions of his life and the next, he has a crazy neighbour declaring his everlasting, undying love for him. Tamamori isn't even sure what he did to warrant this affection.

-

'You’re scaring him, you goon,' Kitayama smacks Miyata's head and then throws in a kick for good measure.

'But I-,'

'You like him,' Kitayama interrupts, 'I think we get it.'

-

Miyata, as Tamamori finds out, is borderline obsessive. Within a week, he's like a walking Tama-chan dictionary. And it's very, very creepy.

He also always manages to be there. Miyata is in the year above Tamamori, but somehow or other, he'll be where ever Tamamori happens to be.

'Its fate,' he says, when Tamamori opens up a seemingly empty bathroom cubicle to find Miyata inside beaming at him.

There isn't any escaping, not even at home in his room. Miyata realises that Tamamori hates the sound of tapping against his window for anything longer than thirty seconds; it drives him, nuts, something he wasn't even aware of until Miyata starts doing it. Every night.

'But I just want to talk,' says Miyata, and for a moment, he sounds so lonely and forlorn that Tamamori almost considers listening for once instead of trying to tune Miyata out with music.

Almost.

Most nights now are spent listening to Miyata list things he likes about Tamamori and about Miyata's day at school. Tamamori tells himself that it's easier to just let Miyata pester him and tune it all out.

'Why me?' Tamamori asks one night, as Miyata is practically hanging over his window and into his room, ' I don't like you back.' And that might be a little bit of a lie because he's grown fond of Miyata in the way one would with an annoying, persistent animal or an exasperating kid.

'I like having someone to like,' Miyata says, 'I'm lonely otherwise. You’re the first person to bear with me for so long.'

'And I don't know why I do,' says Tamamori (and this is not strictly true), ' I talked to you, so go away and let me sleep.'

When Miyata leaves with a cheery good night, Tamamori thinks about it.

It's brain-taxing to think about Miyata. Miyata is strange, someone that Tamamori is pretty sure has hidden angst deep down inside. He wonders if Miyata will share that part with him. Tamamori thinks about when Miyata finally gives up and finds someone else to love and about how the thought makes him frown.

It gives him a headache, which he takes out on a willing Miyata the next day on the way to school.

"I love you, Tama-chan~' says Miyata. Tamamori gives Miyata the customary glare and stomps off, head still hurting and still rather grumpy.

In fact, he's still grumpy during soccer practice which he arrives late to, even later than Kitayama. Kitayama eyes him up and down.

'You know, Miyata really only wants someone to love him back.' he says out of the blue, as Tamamori struggles to yank his shirt over his head.

Tamamori pauses, head still covered by his shirt. 'Eh?'

'Because,' continues Kitayama, 'Miyata doesn't know a thing about love. His parents don't do the love thing very well. And you,' another long look, 'You're the first person to drag this on for so long.'

Tamamori turns rather red under Kitayama's gaze.

'It’s because he won't leave me alone,' he says weakly, 'not because I want to keep him around.'

Kitayama smiles a little, ' sort it out, kid,' he says, finishing with his laces, ' or I’ll have to do it for you.'

-

That night, Tamamori still waits for thirty seconds before he answers Miyata's taps.

Miyata leans in and smiles at Tamamori and rests his elbows on the window.

'So you know, today I-'

'You're gonna fall,' Tamamori interrupts all at once,' just come in already, idiot.'

Then, he goes red and stares at his phone.

Miyata freezes for a while. Then, the smile at lights up his face becomes the brightest Tamamori has ever seen.

'Tama-chan,' he starts.

'You coming or what,' Tamamori snaps, 'I'm locking the windows.’

Miyata hops in quickly and settles next to Tamamori on the bed as though he's lived there all his life.

'I love you, Tama-chan,' he says.

And Tamamori, still blushing, doesn't know what to say because he might actually, maybe, perhaps, like Miyata a little bit too.

-

Tamamori's mother thinks that the friendship they have is adorable. Tamamori isn’t quite sure how Miyata's mother feels about it; she doesn’t seem to feel anything much at all.

All she does, according to what Tamamori observes, is go out and come back late at night.

Sometimes, Tamamori will see Miyata lean into Tamamori's mother's touch or bite his lips when Tamamori hugs his mother. And Tamamori, though not very pro-active, nor very sensitive to others finds himself being very disturbed by this.

The thing is, Tamamori knows why; it's because it's Miyata, and Miyata is becoming special.  And Tamamori, still seventeen and inexperienced doesn’t quite know what to do.

It comes to a head when Miyata taps on Tamamori's window one night. Just once, this is very unusual, so unusual that Tamamori is up and pulling open the curtains and letting Miyata in.

'Hi, Tama-chan,' says Miyata.

They sit silently for a while.

‘I made her a cake,’ Miyata says at last, 'for her birthday. She threw it on the bin when I left the room.’

Miyata snuffles.

All of a sudden, Tamamori feels nothing but anger. Anger, that bubbles in his chest and nearly-almost explodes. He wants to tell Miyata that everything will be okay and that his mother loves him (even though they both know it isn't true). He hugs Miyata, when Miyata is about to leave, real and tight and seeing Miyata's face alone is worth being teased for weeks by Kitayama (who is, apparently, Miyata's small, walking journal)

-

Miyata, as Tamamori finds, isn't as stupid as everyone thinks he is. Sure, he does a whole bunch of stupid things, and likes weird stuff. He even looks like an idiot (a cute sort of idiot, Tamamori thinks). Miyata though, is just like any other boy. He has dreams, and fears and moments where he grows up to become more and more like a man.

Perhaps, it's seeing this Miyata is what does it for Tamamori.

-

‘I love you Tama-chan,’ says Miyata like he usually does every few minutes.

Tamamori looks up.

-

HE SAID IT BACK!!!1!1!, reads the text that Kitayama receives in the middle of the night. Kitayama doesn’t read it though; Fujigaya does, because Kitayama is asleep on his lap in the soccer field.

‘Young love,’ sighs Fujigaya wistfully.

From his lap, Kitayama makes a mildly defensive noise, ‘who a‘you calling old.’

-

Oh hey, is my bias coming on too strong? 8D
Because if jdramas can pretend that Kitayama is seventeen, so can I.
