THE ROCK SHOW!!!!! YYYYEAH, BABY!!!!

Last night was the last night of Rock Show.

It was a really amazing experience being in the Rock Show. I loved that I was given the opportunity. I got to sing in front of a huge audience, and were eighties clothing, and listen to some great music, and eat a ton of licorice, and just be with a bunch of amazing people whom I love.

Saturday I got to school at 8:30am for Rock Show rehearsal and stayed there until around six PM. It was a pretty good day ... aside from the fact that I was violently sick and spent half of my time in the washroom puking my brains out. Oh, baby. That was fun. But thank you to Sam, who helped me and held back me hair. I know it must have been disgusting, Sam, so I can't really thank you enough. --- I probably shouldn't have gone to rehearsal, given my condition, but it was the weekend before the Show and Mr. Einarson is pretty avid about having everyone there. Plus I feel really committed to Rock Show, which is sayin someting, because it is hard for me to be committed to activities for very long. So I went. It wasn't all that bad. Jaimie took me to the matron's wing and I got to sleep for about an hour, and afterward I was feeling fine for a while. But I had to get up on stage while I was sick, and I was so out of it that I completely messed up the song ... I think the Crew was about to kill me (they put a lo of effort into the show and don't want it messed up).

Sunday was Dress Rehearsal. That was a lot of fun! I was not sick that day so I could be wild once again. I got up on stage and did a good performance without any screw-ups. Suzanne and Tom (on guitar and bass) really made the song, though. Yay, to both of you! You guys made the Rock Show, baby! Usually we go through two or three Dress Rehearsals, but Mr. Einarson said that we did so well during rehearsal that he didn't think we needed to do it again, and so we were let out early. It was five and I wasn't being picked up until eight so I went to Jess's house and we watched LIVE AID and also Conspiracy Theory starring Mel Gibson. I love that movie. And so does Jess. Gibson's character is one of my favorite ever, and I just think that the story line is pretty dandy. I really have to buy that movie.

Monday. The first day of Rock Show. The first couple of songs were pretty rough due to technical difficulties. Then suddenly everything short-circuited and we were in silent darkness for almost ten minutes ... Crew members (especially Dean, Jaimie and Mr. Einarson) must have been having coronaries left, right and center. The performers were concerned, yes, but not as much as Crew. --- Then finally everything came back on again and the rest of the Show went really smoothly. And nobody faltered, which was really great. Even Joc, when she forgot the lyrics to her song, ad-libbed and kept going and nobody noticed. I wasn't nervous at all, even though I'm usually terrified at these things. I was just happy to be there. Natalie and Kaitlin came to the Show that night, and they bothed loved it. I think, though, that they liked the guys more than the Show, because that's pretty much what they spent the rest of the night talking about (which is highly out of character, as neither of them ever talks about guys). I don't blame them; there are some pretty goddam amazing guys at my school, but a lot of the guys they were talking about were friends of mine and that can get awkward ... saying they are talented is one thing, but talking about how "hot" they are is another, and something that I don't particularly like getting into, as I can't stand the term "hot". But it all got better because we went to A&W afterwards and got Coke and Teen Burgers ... AND MY COKE TASTED EXACTLY LIKE GUMMIE WORMS!!!!!

It was like a party in my mouth!

Tuesday. The second night of Rock Show and, in my opinion, the best. The show was great, there were no screw-ups. The energy level was amazing. Part of the reason being that the crowd was a lot better than on the first night. Everyone was into the music. It was just sheer brilliance. My parents came that night and I was very happy, because I really wanted them to see a good show. My father, who can't stand school-related ocassions, was blown away by the Show. He loved it so much that he's spent the last day and a half writing a kudos letter to Mr. Einarson, who is the Rock Show co-ordinate. I've hardly ever had more fun than I did on Tuesday night, it was really great. I'd like to go on about how great is was, but I have other things to do.

Wednesday. Last night, the Last Night. The show was amazing, once a again, the energy level was phenominal. But I couldn't enjoy it as much I would hve liked because everyone was just exhausted ... it didn't interfere with the Show, only that I was indifferent to a lot of things that normally would have made the night great. It was also kind of sad, because suddenly Rock Show -- this great thing that you've been working on since the second week of school -- is over. And I felt kind of upset for a while. I was really sad, not for me, but for the people in the Show who are graduating this year. This was their last Rock Show. And that to me is really sad. I know it probably doesn't mean much to any of you, but it means something to me, because I know that I'll cry at my last Rock Show. I really love it so much; being a part of something that great and energetic and connective ... If I were Victoria (singer and dance choreographer), who has spent six years in the Show and is graduating in June, I don't think I would have taken it as well as she did. She was really great on the last night, even though she did cry just a little. Also, this year was Bonnie's last year as vocal instructor for the Rock Show; she's retiring. This doen't mean very much to me, because I only met her this year and we weren't brilliant friends or anything ... but I know how much she means to everyone else, and especially to Mr. Einarson who hugged her last night and nearly cried when he did it.

It was a really great show.

I shall now point out some of the highlights:
  • Ethan's singing of The Guess Who's "Shakin' All Over", which I've ranked as my second-favorite Rock Show performance. He was just really amazing on stage and I love his voice. It's not perfect but he sounds like he means what he is singing.
  • The way that James Iron Body ran around in his 213487345897 bazillion-year-old fluorescent-orange hat and green-and-brown army pants performing his Crew duties in utter seriousness. Oh, yes. James, you know you're the Rock Show Man. It was weird to see him so serious; he's never serious. --- Mim and I have yet to come up with a Crew name for him.
  • "Superman's Song" and Julian's breath-taking vocals and stage-presence. Oh, and Mim's fawning over his sheer brilliance (which is again out of character, because Mim doesn't fawn). Third favorite performance.
  • The plenty o-licorice.
  • Matt's super-sexy guitar solo in "Roll On Down the Highway".
  • Mark's phenominal energy and how he always has more fun than anybody else when he performs. He was pretty damn amazing in "Roll On Down the Highway".
  • Doug's shouting of "YE FAIR MAIDENS!" when Anna and Tammi performed Lorena McKinett's "Lady of Shallot" in mid-evil gowns.
  • Doug, and his amazingly brilliant facial expression while he plays the drums.
  • Suzanne's mother relentlessly shaking my hand and thanking me "for the bee-oo-tee-fole song".
  • Suzanne.
  • The way James broke out of his recently-solemn state and hugged me and Jess the way he used to.
  • Rock Show rehearsals when everyone, even Mr Einarson, is ten-yrs-old again and loving it.
  • WILL'S AMAZING, AMAZING, AMAZING PERFORMANCE OF NEIL YOUNG'S "SUGAR MOUNTAIN"!!!! IT WAS PHENOMINAL! HE'S PHENOMINAL! I CAN'T BELIEVE IT! HE IS BOB DYLAN'S PRODICLE SON!!!!! NO JOKE!!!! He got up on stage alone with just an acoustic and a harmonic and it was positively the most mezmorizing performance of the night!!!!!!
  • The Encore, and how we all got to run out on stage and dance and sing "Life is a Highway" at the top of our lungs. And the way the audience got up and danced too. And how we were all one but swarm of people ocnnected by everything. And how Dean secretly arranged for confetti guns and surprised everyone (even Mr. Einarson) with a confetti shower which just added immensly to the Encore. And the way it felt to be with so many incredible people under this paper rain ... I'll miss Rock Show.
