Sengoku Kiyosumi, once known as "Lucky" Sengoku, flopped gracelessly into a chair at a small table in an equally small cafe and sighed explosively, absently rubbing his right shoulder after he dropped his book-heavy backpack. It ached terribly on cold, wet days like this. He barely glanced at the waitress who who greeted him with a flirty smile, and brusquely gave his order of a mocha latte with two shots of expresso and a toasted bagel. Then he sighed again and turned his attention to the snow falling down outside. He really didn't like snow. It was kinda depressing and he didn't like being depressed. Much better to be cheerful and upbeat.
Not to mention snow reminded him of the accident that cost him the ability to play tennis on a competitive level.
He shook his head violently. What was done, was done, he reminded himself. It would do him no good to dwell on it. At least the physical therapy he'd had to go through had restored most of his range of movement, if not the strength he'd once had. And his personal experience had helped him decide what he wanted to do, now that playing tennis was out. He'd decided to go to college and get a dual degree in teaching and physical therapy. Old man Banji had given him a few hints, while they were talking about his options after that accident, that he wanted to retire soon, so Sengoku was working hard to be able to take his spot as Yamabuki's tennis coach. Not a big dream, no, but one he knew would be just as rewarding, in the long run.
He grunted his thanks to the waitress when she brought his order, then reached down to dig a book and a notebook out of his bag and got to work on his current assignment.
When he next looked up, the snow had lessened considerably, and according to the clock two hours had gone by. He grunted in surprise. He hadn't thought he'd become so absorbed in his studying. As he gathered up his stuff, the waitress he'd barely noticed came over to collect his dishes.
"I'm so sorry. I didn't notice the time," Sengoku apologized with a smile, taking notice of her for the first time. She was quite pretty, with enormous blue eyes and long, dark red hair. It was funny. She seemed kind of familiar.
She smiled brightly at him and giggled. "It's no problem. You seemed engrossed in your book, so I didn't want to bother you too much." Then her smile turned to a cute little pout. "But I'll never forgive you if you don't greet me properly, Sengoku-nii-san!" She said as she shook a finger at him.
"Uh ... what?"
She cocked her head, looking up at him curiously. Suddenly she grinned. "Come on, Sengoku. I know it's been more than six years, but you must remember me!"
"I'm sorry ... I'm afraid I don't, and I'd remember a cute girl like you."
She chuckled and shook her head. "Maybe you just need a reminder. Do you remember the charity tournament Atobe-san hosted? I was there. I'm sure you'll remember this!" Without another word, the girl spun around and stood in front of him, reaching back and drawing his arms forward. "Possession is nine-tenths of the law, and I gots possession! 'Kaya-nii told me that."
He jolted. He remembered who had said that to him. "Sachiko!" He exclaimed. "Kamio Sachiko? Akira's little sister?" He couldn't believe it. The last time he'd seen her, she'd been a ten-year-old. He turned her around and gave the girl a hug. "Amazing! You look so different! How are you? How's your brother and sister?"
"Everyone's ok. Miki joined the middle school girls track team. She's almost as fast as Akira. Akira-nii is on the National Track Team and working on his degree. He still plays tennis though. 'Kaya-nii decided to go pro, as I'm sure you already knew."
"Kamio! You're still on the clock! Chit-chat with cute boys after work!"
"Urk. Sorry, Sengoku-san. I really should get back to work." She offered him a sheepish smile. "I'm off in about an hour and a half."
Grinning, he patted her on the back and gave her a shove toward the register. "No problem. I can come back later. Maybe I could take you to dinner?"
"I think I'd like that," Sachiko said thoughtfully. "We can get all caught up. Should I call Nii-san? Maybe we can all go out."
"Sure." He replied, although he was confused by the stab of irritation at the offer. "It'll be nice to see an old friend." He chuckled, suddenly struck by the thought of an Atobe-run reunion of all the school tennis clubs. "Well, I should get going before I get you an any more trouble with your boss. See you later?"
"Yep!" she chirped at him as she headed into the back.
He watched her go, then pulled on his coat and threw his backpack over his shoulder. If he hurried he'd have just enough time to get home and change into something a bit nicer. Just ... wow. Akira's little sister had grown up into quite the heartbreaker.
I just loved the Sengoku/Sachiko dynamic Stormy set up in Tennis Teens For Charity. This is part one of the first chapter of perhaps four.
