The iPad seems to run a slightly modified version of the iPhone OS. This means it will read PDFs natively. It also apparently will run most appas from the app store, which means you can download one of several third party pdf readers. Or you can buy Apple's iWork, which will read and write pdfs (also MS Office formats).

Grab the iphone kindle app from the app store. Also note that if you already own an iphone or ipod touch, any apps you already purchased can be synced to the ipad for free.
