Our cat Shaggy Nick died this morning. It is truly the end of an era. I got him soon after Michelle and I started dating... almost 14 years we've had him. He's essentially the physical embodiment of our life together.

I should write more about him right now, give him the remembrance he deserves, but I'm just too tired and numb right now.

Me too. For some reason, it's really comforting that other people got to see him last night, too.

I feel guilty because at one point last night I found myself remembering a cat I had in high school. One night a bunch of friends were over and we were shooting pool in my parent's basement, and the cat came down and hung out with us, which he never did. The next day, my mom and I took the cat to the vet and learned he had renal failure, and she had put him down.

So last night, I looked over at Nick, and for some reason I remembered that night and had that feeling... that having everyone hanging out on the couches with him might be his last hurrah. And as delusional and nonsensical as it is, part of me feels like I caused it by thinking it, you know?

I know you already know this in your head, but there is nothing to feel bad about. Part of you may just have sensed something is all. Hope the irrational sad part of you realizes this, too. :(
