Sakura never gets used to the cascade of memories when she gets a feather back. The only thing she can compare it to is waking up in the middle of the night from a long and complicated dream, only to open your eyes to darkness. Then you wake once more, wake to yourself: Oh. That’s who I am. This is where I am. I’m home.
One feather returned to Sakura the jumbled fragments of hazily recalled dreams: she is a murderess who slaughtered the world in a fit of pique. She went naked to the marketplace because she didn’t like any of the clothes she had to wear, and everyone pointed and laughed. She watches as a woman with butterfly wings embraces a black-haired boy. She is the butterfly. She is flying.
For an instant Sakura thought these moments were memories of her waking life, and her entire conception of herself and the world shattered. Then she realized what they had to be.
And then she wasn’t so sure.
Many worlds away and not so far, Watanuki tries to recreate an oden recipe he learned from a kitsune. The soup boils over and burns him. The pain is vivid, the hurt is real.
But that’s how it goes, in dreams.
