Thoughts on Evolution and Everything Else

For whatever reason, I've found I've been getting into discussions on evolution alot recently. One of the things I've noticed is the number of misconceptions that are out there about either side of evolution (either for it, against it, or just in general).
Scientists don't have all the facts on this topic, but there is alot of information available ( Read more... )

hey little! You should read "Hens Teeth and Horses Toes" by Stephen Jay Gould. Veery interesing and funny stories about evolution. Gould was a Harvard professor and one of the theories he advanced was punctuated equilibrium. I'll send you the book if you IM me your address

Evolution...Christians believe the human race began 6000 years ago, who are we to argue with them we weren't there. But yes evolution is an interesting topic, I took the class in High school too. One thing I find interesting is Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believe that an animals use or disuse of a trait leads to generations either having that trait enchanced or removed. Scientists have dismissed this idea but lately tests prove that it can be true. If so how will humans look in the future? Well for one we will be bald, yes male pattern bald this is a only going to increase as we do not need hair since we wear clothes. We will get smaller, more effcient. But anyways what if this isn't true, maybe we need a disaster to evolve...either way I'd love to see the next evolutionary species on earth, that is a goal of mine...now to figure out how to live for a 1000 years or more!

The point of science is to discover how the world works through facts. *Some* Christians believe world was created 6000 years ago. As proof for evolution continues to pile up, though, more and more are accepting a combination of religious and scientific views to explain things more logically. That evolution occurs is a fact, and that the earth is much older than 6000 years is a fact. We don't have an exact number, nor do we know every single aspect of evolution, but the evidence is overwhelming enough to persuade many religious people to consider altering their views to fit the facts.
Lamarkian evolution does not work. Lamarck believed that ibehavioral changes could lead to changes in genotype (genetic charfacteristics). With the exception of some strains of bacteria, this is false. Changes in behavior can affect phenotype (physical characteristics)and changes in Phenotype can indirectly affect the well being of your children. If animals use/disuse a trait for a very long time, then evolution can cause that trait to become ( ... )
