For me, I think having read A Golden Age would have made this book work a lot better, since my main problem was lack of context and that really interfered in the story. But as you mentioned, the books were presented as standalones.

Oh you can always skip a month if you want to! Though I'm interested in hearing about more Guatemalan books.
