It's not that it's out of battery, it's just that it's as lazy as it's owner

So, is getting a new iPod worth it? I mean, I got my current iPod used from my brother-in-law for $100 (which my dad paid as a gift for my birthday) back in December. It's a first-gen (one of the first that came out, he's an Apple freak :P), 4GB. I don't actually use more than 1GB myself so I guess the better option would be an iPod mini. At ( Read more... )

Why not get one of the many useful, cheaper, and more effective ipod alternatives out there? Why get an ipod at all?

I knew one of you was going to say that :P. To be completely and unashamefully honest: the iPod looks pretty damn cool. It's a superficial reason to want something but there it is.

Seriously though, I am looking at other, non-ipod, alternatives. The latest Sony Network Walkmen are very cool, for example, and have the advantage of using flash memory instead of a hard-drive (less battery consumption, less chance it'll break, lighter) which is useful as long as you don't want to carry around too much music (I doubt I'll ever use much more than 2GB).

The only things that iPods have that other don't (besides the looks), is a) the iPod + iTunes combination and the iPod is also completely hackable.

However, I'm open to alternatives, if you have any good ones.

I don't really know anything about mp3 players, but I can tell you that I have a Dell Jukebox 20GB something-or-other and it's been working quite well for me. They've also got, I think, a 5GB out as well, and that goes for about $200 normally (though I think right now all the players are $50 off, so it's $150). The 20GB usually goes for $250, but it's only $200 now.

Anyhow, this mp3 players has worked really well for me -- I haven't had any problems with it that I can think of. I like it because you can put all different kinds of music on it -- it doesn't have to be .mp3 or whatever, which helps a lot with putting my CDs and everything on it.

I know you're really looking for probably something cheaper, but I thought I'd recommend the Dell players just so you knew about them. Here's the mp3 players' website. :)

iPod batteries are notorious for being not quite up to par, due to the odd and custom nature of the things. But what is availible now are replacement batteries and tools to open the critter.

I don't know any details, though.. mine is holding out ok, and all.I think señor google is in order at this point.

Good luck dude!

Found you via my friends of friends list . . . and I hope you don't mind me answering, but we're a multi-mp3 player family . . . some have broken and been replaced, some just are TOO AWFUL to use . . . but you know what? My iPod mini is the best of the lot. Easy to use interface (all computers in the house use iTunes so we can listen to each other's music), user friendly . . . and just plain sexy looking. I love mine, and would never consider using another player.

Oh, and I've owned a Rio, still do, actually, as it's stuck in a drawer gathering dust. Even my KIDS hate it. It has the WORST software I've ever subjected myself to . . .

But, that's just me . . .
