Well, its an interesting idea in a few ways, but i think that the author was working outside of the Biblical scheme. The role of Judas has always kind of perplexed me, because Christ's death was mandated since the fall and predicted in several places throughout the Old Testament as well as in the new. I believe that Judas, as his friend, being the agent of destruction was in some was a way to emphasize that while Jesus reveals Himself to us and gives His life for us, we are unworthy of it. I also believe that it is a way to reaffirm our need to commit ourselves to righteous action throughout our lives; while Judas had a privelege as an apostle as being a witness to the Incarnation, it was essential for him to still act righteously to be in God's favor.
