Obesity thread

Jun 24, 2013 12:49

So how long before someone tries to tell me I'm just too emotional to have the discussion? Or that if I'd just try as hard as they do, I wouldn't be obese? (Aside from baxus, who's basically already done that.)

ran's, obesity

I can't even with those threads any more. I just can't.

I tried to go back in to reply to Greywolf on some issue probably to do with the fact that no, all obese people aren't just going to drop dead of a heart attack but realised that it's just simply not worth it. I've had this conversation umpteen times on those boards and the only thing is the overweight/obese boarders become the "exceptional fatty". But every other fat person is lazy, slovenly and dirty.

I think I've gotten as involved as I care to, too. I wasn't thrilled with the original presentation, but at least it mostly stayed on the AMA's decision and its consequences. As soon as it turns into 'but if they only...', it drives me batty, and there's a very, very low chance of the people saying those things stopping.

I wonder if they make bootstraps in plus sizes.

Well, my friend/relative/distant acquaintance is fat AND lazy, what do you have to say about that eh? Eh?

Seriously, why do these fuckers think it's necessary to ALL say shit like that, every damn time the subject comes up?

And they don't want to lose weight so obviously must be defective.

Because fat people aren't real people, are they?

Well, I only said SOME, so you're completely overreacting.

I will be the first to admit that I'm still not 100% "there" when it comes to overthrowing my own social conditioning regarding obesity, courtesy of my grandmother via my mom, but it's still shocking to see the degree of dehumanization that goes on. :\ It's like "Do you not hear/understand what the hell you are saying? What the implications of those words are?"

ETA: I want to make clear that I don't judge others for being overweight/obese -- not my body, therefore not my business. Like every good female, I've managed to just turn all that shit in on myself.

I think most people aren't "there" - the attitude is seriously pernicious and hard to overcome. And no, I don't think they really do understand what they're saying, not really. "Oh, I don't mean you, I mean.. uh.. this fabrication of my imagination, conveniently constructed to fit all of the terrible stereotypes."

Exactly. And the same people would probably shit themselves to death from shame if it were pointed out they were saying the same kinds of things about, say, African-Americans. "Oh, you're clearly the outlier, all articulate and stuff. It's the other black people that are welfare-cheatin' thugs." *facepalm to death*

Exactly what you guys just said.

Doing more performance of the Burlesque/Cabaret style this is in focus for me at the moment. I had a great chat with my sister Lizzy about this today. About what we choose to do in terms of costuming and performance and how we are about it all. I am going to take the plunge and do a course at Pineapple dance studios over the winter,. It will be a test.
