“Hello?” I casually picked up the phone as I was preparing dinner to send over to Zanny’s place later. “Hello, Kiki? I’m Zanny.”
“Haha, I know, no one calls me Kiki except you. Are you feeling better?” I packed the last dish into the lunchbox and leaned against the counter.
“Mhmm, I’m feeling much better from the rest already. Thanks.” She sounded too polite than usual, and it made our conversation a little awkward.
“Is everything okay, Zanny?”
“I need to talk to you…”
She sounded really confused and sad over the phone, and this wasn’t a good sign.
“Okay, when Jjong comes back I’ll get him to send me over to your apartment, I made dinner…”
“No, don’t come with Hyun! Come alone…” She sounded like she was about to cry. “Okay, okay, I won’t come with Jjong. How do I get to your house? Text me the address alright?”
I got on a cab and went to visit her right away. Oh man, please not let it be anything too serious.
“Zanny? Why is her doorbell not working?” I pounded on her door. “Zanny?”
“Yeah coming!” A muffled voice came from far within. “Kiki!” She hugged me the moment she opened her door.
“Let’s be a little more discreet. Two SHINee members coming to and forth this apartment is no joke, we may end up on the news again. Let’s go inside.” Oh yes, speaking of the news. I forgot to check for reporters just now, meaning they could really have followed me here. We just ended up on the front page again today, with pictures of Jjong and I sending Zanny to the hospital last night.
“Kiki…” Zanny looked at me with a confused expression. “Hyun came over just now.”
“Yeah I know! he sent you lunch right? I made the porridge with him! Is it good?”
“Kiki, he confessed to me.”
I stopped in my tracks. Suddenly my mind was void of all thoughts and emotions, but it all came back within a few seconds and was flooding out my mind.
“Oh, that’s great, what did you say?”
“Kiki, I know you are upset.” She hugged me as she said. Tears started to fall, quietly.
“No, why would I be upset? What did you say?”
“I didn’t give him an answer. I said I needed some time to think about it.” She hugged me tighter, but I let go of her immediately.
“Why do you need to think? Don’t you like him?”
“Yes I do, but… What about you?” She looked at me, teary-eyed. How do I get angry with her?
I should be angry with myself. Why do I even let myself land into something like this? I should know better than to let this even happen.
“Why do you even consider my feelings? They are nothing! I mean, as compared, you would be a much better choice for Jjong, isn’t it?” I could sense the sadness in Kiki when he said those words, even though he tries to hide it.
How can I pretend that I didn’t see the wounded heart that was bleeding from all the cuts?
“Zanny, didn’t we agree to let him decide on this? Why are we still arguing on who gets him? He made his choice clear, didn’t he?” I held her face to pull her gaze back towards mine. “Zanny, don’t give him up. He’s worth every little feeling that you have.”
“Kiki…” She started crying again. I pulled her close to me and consoled her as she cried, but I could feel my own tears coming as well.
“Jonghyun, where is Kim Kibum?” Manager Hyung bellowed as he stepped into the dorm. “I’ve only been gone for a few days and he makes it to the front page of the entertainment news! What is he doing? What have you all been doing these few days?”
I sighed as I put my face into my hands. There comes the lecture that I dreaded.
“Where is Kim Kibum? Is he with the girl now?” Hyung continued to walk around the living room like an angry elephant. I guess it would be wise to text him and get him back here as soon as possible.
“Have you read today’s newspaper? Why were you two at the hospital yesterday night? Is it the same girl? And why are you carrying her? Is there something that you are hiding from me?” Hyung keep on ranting and it was really getting on my nerves. I grabbed the paper that he left on the coffee table and read the headlines. Damn, we made it again. I skimmed through to find pictures of us rushing into the hospital, with Zann in my hands. There was even a basic profile given on page 3. Now, that has gone too far.
“Who is she, Jonghyun? She was from your high school right? Were both of you close?” Hyung sat beside me and continued the ranting. “You got to come clean with me right now, I can then make it clear to the media, or, you know, cover up stuff.”
“Why is this such a big deal? Can’t I get worried for a friend?” I started to lose my cool, especially when this reminds me of Zann’s reaction to my confession just now. Just a friend, that’s what we are right now.
“No… I mean…” I guess hyung was shocked at my sudden rebel, as his attitude softened immediately. “It is perfectly okay for you guys to have your own friends, even girlfriends, to the extent. Just that, I don’t want you guys to do anything stupid. You know how SHINee’s name is clean and that does a lot to the image that we give the public. Rumors do not help your image at all.”
I did not speak. Hyung made a point there.
“So, do you want to tell me who is that girl? You seem so uptight, she must be someone important to you.” This was the first time hyung looked concerned for something outside work, and he really feels like a hyung right now.
I flipped the papers open to page 3, and there lay Zann’s particulars. “She’s Han Lizann, my high school classmate, American Chinese, but was born and raised in Korea. We were desk partners in class, and we often made a din in class, making it seem to everyone that we were enemies. Nobody knows we are actually close friends in private. I know it’s a little weird, but we just like to watch people pull us apart from our fights and such, then we will laugh at them in private.
“I brought her to meet SHINee last week for the first time, and we spent quite a lot of time together with her as a group. Kibum became very close to her as a friend and they spend a lot of time together individually as well.”
“So, Kibum likes her?” Hyung suggested.
“No, Kibum says that not what it is between the both of them. They are just very good friends.” I paused. “…But I like her, hyung.”
“You? I thought you said she was a very good friend of yours!” Hyung was shocked at the sudden change in perspective.
“Yeah, I thought so too. But in the end, I realized I liked her when I got jealous seeing her and Kibum together.” I sighed.
“Well, liking someone should be a very happy feeling, why are you sighing then?” Hyung looked confused. Well I guess so, for a person who is newly married, love is just so sweet and full of happiness.
“Well hyung, the person has to like you back.”
“But she likes you.” Key’s voice rang in the distance. “You know that yourself.”
Since when did Kibum come back?
“Kim Kibum, you are finally back. Where have you been?” Hyung stood up and looked at me angrily.
“I went to Zanny’s place to send her dinner.”
“Zanny? The girl that you were on the papers with?” Hyung was reaching his limit, I guess. Jjong signaled me to sit down, but I ignored him.
“Yes, that’s Zanny. What’s the matter?” I tried to keep my cool and act nonchalant about this, but Hyung got angrier.
“What’s the matter? You have the cheek to ask me ‘what’s the matter’? Do you know what have you done to SHINee? To yourself?”
I sniggered. “I only made a friend, did that affect anything at all?”
Hyung will be bursting into flames any moment, I swear. ”Do you know how your friendship is going to ruin your career and yourself? You are now portrayed very badly!”
“Then just clarify it? I don’t know why is it so hard for celebrities to have their own lives. Talk to Jjong more about it, you should be more worried about him going to have a girlfriend soon.” I walked into my room, without looking back, leaving a puzzled Jjong and a fuming and shocked hyung in the living room.
I felt my heart wince with every curse hurled at me. With the slam of my door, the overflowing emotions proceeded to leave my eyes at free fall.
