guys, i have been super into watching ken burns' documentary, national parks: america's best idea on pbs. i think you should watch too -- 8 pm, all week, six episodes in all. they're all online too, if that doesn't jive with your life. they're super rad, and maybe not as epic as planet earth but still inspire that itch to travel the world and see

2) email the archive people at the alumnae library, they might know about barbie washburn being the house's namesake and i'd be interested to hear the results!

i already checked the smith website. different washburn! though i don't know if she's related to them, but still. house was definitely built before she got there. :)
