i learned a very valuable lesson today.

Never assume that because something is posted where everyone can see it and open for comments that a comment will be welcome.

I read a lot of fanfiction -- and I do mean alot -- and most of it is pretty good and most of the writers I have read are pretty receptive to critiques.  Unfortunately, and I learned ( Read more... )

I really do hear you. I started in HP fandom a few years back, and it often reminds me of high school, which I hated. There are a lot of wonderful people in the fandom, but because it's so large it has a larger number than usual of wankers. I learned to stay away from certain sites (like fandom wank, which at least identifies itself as wank!) and only read sites where I know that people who have nothing nice to say are not welcome to say the not-nice. But there are a lot of hidden rules, as you say. I thought "constructive criticism" really meant that. Now, I occasionally post on writing on my lj, but say nothing negative unless it's a really minor correction and a writer I know well ( ... )
