Wow, the switch thing's got urrbody riled up! I've only seen the first three episodes of season 3 so I'm not quite as worked up about it yet, but try as I might to be unspoiled, flist reactions about it have sunk into my consciousness. So I read this and totally agree with urrthang you said girl!
Stefan isn't Angelus circa season 2 of BTVS, I think he's more like Beige!Angel circa AtS season 2. And Beige!Angel IIRC pretty much debunked the whole soul vs no soul debate and proved that they are one and the same. I really hope the writers fix that issue before the season's over and I also get the impression that if the mythology gets too heavy and complicated, consistency is the first casualty, then comes character development. See BtVS season 7, AtS season 4, SPN season 5 & 6, BSG season 3 & 4, LOST season 3,4 and s6, X-Files season 8-9... You get my point. *g*
The Angelus thing is always a sore point for me. Yeah, Angel is just as capable of doing things like Angelus, but the idea the show put forth was that Angelus is a demon and a demon can't help but do that kind of stuff. It's a gray area for sure, but I've always like the idea of the internal cage with Angel-that when the soul is in charge, the demon is in the cage and unable to influence any decisions and vice versa. It's an interesting image, and resonates in the whole Klaus!Alaric thing from season two, in which we are left to debate how Alaric's experience with Klaus in the driver seat really went
( ... )
Isobel is a really great example of how the switch (should?) works. It's so irritating how the writers are using the concept inconsistently. Watching the show, judging by behavior, Stefan never seems to be under the influence of the 'switch', at least when I'm thinking of flashback ripper Stefan from earlier this season. He's never emotionless, and I think the memory gaps are something unique to Stefan as well. It's terrible writing, to label it under that concept, when there are so many better ways they could be handling it. :/
Ugh the historical inaccuracies! Seriously, vikings now too? O_o
I CANNOT EVEN BEGIN TO GET INTO THE HISTORICAL STUFF! EENA TEACHES HISTORY AND THIS IS NOT GOOD HISTORY PORTRAYALS!!
Seriously, I just want to take my Red Teacher Mark and write "WRONG, WRONG, WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!" all over my screen (but I won't because my husband might get annoyed).
And yeah, Stefan is never without any emotions, so the concept of the Switch as they put it forth doesn't really hold. The addiction avenue is much better, certainly puts a darker taint on Stefan's character, but it's more honest than all this other stuff.
