Written for Day 19 of
31_days May challenge. The prompt was, "I wish someone would love me, even if it is a lie."
Marilyn Teller set the cup of hot chocolate down on the battered end-table. There were shortbread cookies balanced precariously on the very edge of the saucer, misshapen hearts decorated with a crooked smiley face done in bright-blue icing.
“For the best, hardest-working girl in Eerie,” she said, her smile soft and warm as a summer’s afternoon. She chucked Sara Sue under the chin with one hand, then stepped back and pushed the long sweep of blonde hair away from her face with the other. Sara Sue ducked her head and her hair swung back into place, concealing her expression from view.
“I got you something,” Marilyn continued, reaching behind a laundry hamper overflowing with dirty clothes to pull out a glittering gift-bag bursting with iridescent curling ribbon and perfumed tissue paper covered in swirls of sparkling colour and handing it over.
Sara Sue held it with only her fingertips and looked up, her face aglow with anticipation. Marilyn nodded encouragingly. The gift, nestled at the very bottom of the bag amidst twists of silk and wire fashioned to look like small rosebuds, was a sky-blue headband set with clear paste jewels shaped like starbursts.
“You look so beautiful in blue.”
